Just picked it up yesterday from San Gabriel Nursery. I've been looking at it for over 7 years and couldn't decide if I wanted to take on the challenge or not. Well right now San Gabriel is having a sale on some of their pre-bonsai stock and I was able to pick it up at a decent price. It needs a lot of a work though... probably hasn't been repotted in 10 years, if ever.

They had a couple of big elms... this one is going to require work but it has decent roots. All the branches have to go though, and possibly that knob on the left.

From someone who used to live in the MidWest, trust me when I say this is bonsai paradise. There are tons of options in the LA area...

San Gabriel Nursery sells coast live oaks. They started to put some funky spiral, s-curves ones that are okay but in their understock training area I saw a lot of pre-bonsai oak in training. If you ask Mr. Ishii or some of the staff I'm sure they'd pull some out to sell.I cried when I moved and had to leave behind my favorite white pine
