Another cork elm project

It looks like a whomping willow!

Nice!

Looking forward to it. Have you had it long?

Just picked it up yesterday from San Gabriel Nursery. I've been looking at it for over 7 years and couldn't decide if I wanted to take on the challenge or not. Well right now San Gabriel is having a sale on some of their pre-bonsai stock and I was able to pick it up at a decent price. It needs a lot of a work though... probably hasn't been repotted in 10 years, if ever.

Lol I looked at that tree for several minutes and could not pull the trigger.

They had a couple of big elms... this one is going to require work but it has decent roots. All the branches have to go though, and possibly that knob on the left.
Hey, I'm not even in the picture, never mind on the left!!....yes it should go but I'd probably layer it off.

I really really like this guy, great find!
I would have bought it years ago.
Great display of patience!

Ok, buds pop in Feb, and close proximity to a bonsai nursery? I'm moving into your basement.

From someone who used to live in the MidWest, trust me when I say this is bonsai paradise. There are tons of options in the LA area...

I just can't keep cold hardy trees :(

So you are keeping this cork bark?

I cried when I moved and had to leave behind my favorite white pine :( as well as oaks and northern maples... sad day...
How close are you to ONT? I have to fly in next week for a quick trip to Fort Irwin.

San Gabriel Nursery sells coast live oaks. They started to put some funky spiral, s-curves ones that are okay but in their understock training area I saw a lot of pre-bonsai oak in training. If you ask Mr. Ishii or some of the staff I'm sure they'd pull some out to sell.
