Didnt look to see if this was suggested already or you tried this.

You could try gently poking holes in the soil with a screwdriver or similar tool. Also gently scrape the top layer of soil off if it's clogged and replace with new soil. Be careful not to pull roots doing this. A chopstick or similar tool works well for this. I typically look at all my trees in the spring when I take them out of the cold frame and clean the top layer of soil if I'm not repotting them.

Hey, I just looked back at the last picture posted. That soil doesn't look clogged. Does it drain slowly or water pool up on the surface? When was it last repotted and what ratio of APL is it in?

I bought it last year, my understanding is it was repotted the year before that. I added new Akadama to the top to help with percolation because water pooled on the surface a lot - so it could definitely be a watering problem. Poking holes in it probably a good idea. FWIW it great fantastically last year.

I don’t know the ratio but knowing who would have repotted it I’d wager 1:1:1 or thereabouts
