Just wanted to share with the forums this American Elm I picked up today at DragonTree Nursery in Palm City. I also did a little initial cutback, can't wait to see it come spring time... Happy holidays to all!

That's a nice piece of elm.

Nice find! It's got the bones for a good natural looking tree already. Keep us updated.

How's the American Elm doing these days?

Any progress photos of growth after that cut back pruning?

What would you estimate is the trunk diameter?

Doubt it dude, he just cut it back yesterday or the day before.

,I picked one of these up in Palm Bay last year, its just south of Melbourne on on I-1. Mine had what looked like some leaf burn, it turned out to be an elm disease which killed it.

Melbourne is pretty far south in Florida for Ulmus americana. They may have some difficulties there.

Didn't even think they could grow in Florida at all until I heard them referred to as a Florida elm.

Looking at your tree again and I had another thought. I would consider cutting back a little more even (later on after new growth pops perhaps). I imagine that you wouldn't want the outline of the canopy to be much bigger than this now and you're going to need a little space for ramification and taper on your branches.

I'm a bit farther South than Melbourne actually... but they do just fine here. They grow not even 20 minutes from my house.

Oh yeah, you're 100% right... I'll cut it back again sometime in the late spring or summer probably. The first left branch needs some tweaking as well.

American elm grows very well for me. I do protect from afternoon sun starting sometime in July.

If you're planning on shohin I'd cut back relatively hard in spring and start ramifying from new buds. American elms are work horses. You could have something nice in 2 years. Once the bark starts to mature more it will get much better too.
