American Elm #3

Nice start on an American elm! Already building some taper and good branching. The smaller leaves on your tree look just like a Catlin elm. I feel this elm species is underrepresented in bonsai and I plan to obtain one locally, if feasible.

Those cuts in the first picture, aren't u worried the leaf/branch will die, because it's cut very close to the leaf and no room for dieback?

Nope. And if a leaf were to die they almost always sprout out of the end of a cut. These ain't maples. There is no die back under cuts.

It came with taper down low. A trick to get taper in American elm is to use some of the tap root as the basr. They are usually fatter underground than above.
This trunk is actually the top of the tap root.
Also when collecting these Ive noticed that the roots are sometimes better subjects for bonsai than the tree you see above ground.
