I collected a large beech last year that slept in until the end of June. It is leafing out now along with all the other beeches. Give yours time, and it should survive.
You can also see that the leaves from the callus at the chop site are chlorotic relative to the leaves from a bud lower on the trunk. I'm sure once the vascular pathways are better established, the upper leaves will be greener, but for now, the tree is a good illustration of healthy versus chlorotic leaves.
