Being a bit of a newer person here I was curious if there were any good sources for affordable yet frost proof pots.

I have 3 trees that have their first styling and will be developing over the next couple years and I would like to get them into something nicer than a plastic nursery pot. The issue as I’m sure everyone knows is pots very quickly get very expensive.

First and foremost I’m looking for an unglazed oval probably around 12-13 inches wide. Could probably vary some but I’m pretty sure this is where I will land. Oh and as the title mentioned I live well into freeze territory so I need something that won’t crack when if gets below freezing.

Thanks

You're local garden shop will likely have something that fits the bill, though it may not be the most bonsai traditional looking. Many of us have found ceramic dishes of various types at yard sales and thrift stores and drilled the holes ourselves with a diamond tip hole bit.
The thing I look for when taking the later route is this: hold the dish on your fingertips up to your ear, and give the rim a flick with your finger. A high fired piece will ring with a clear, lasting tone, almost like a bell sometimes. Also, anything quality stoneware will be frost proof, but this isn't always labeled or otherwise clear just by looking.
A low fired piece with usually be in the form of terracotta, and when flicked will produce a low, almost hollow wooden tone. Still, some terracotta is fairly frost resistant, and there's not always an easy way to tell.

This is one I found and drilled myself.

What would you consider affordable? Give or take

That’s a good question I guess. I know I won’t be paying hundreds of dollars per pot at least not at this point. I don’t think I have anything worthy of it. 20-50 a pot ? I’m not sure that’s partially why I’m asking.

I would be open to mica I guess though I didn’t think they had any lower profile pots.

Here’s the first tree I’d like to worry work towards getting into a nice pot.

Mica pots are always a good option but for more variety and just a bit more money, Yixing pots are an excellent alternative. Fair priced for sure. More on the $50 end of your budget, but worth it.

Thank you exactly what I’m looking for. I’m sure I could stretch my budget for the right tree or pot I just want to not go so crazy. Have a kid in college and solo income.

I have ordered from Bonsaivision (noted by @Hartinez above) and have been impressed by the quality for the money. They do seem to try to pick really good stuff and have a “curated” stock.
