Here's my first official planting and entry. This is a quercus garryana that was a checkout line freebie from my local nursery. I love their idea. I'll be collecting more to enter as well, of course!

I am not joining to compete against anyone but the squirrels. Planted about 30 and put the extras in a bowl for the locals to enjoy.
I have no idea what kind... coworker knew I was looking for acorns and gave me about 100. Lol
Good luck everybody.

I'm going to try for fun with some white and northern red oaks, though I don't have a lot of hope for them doing much in 10 years in my climate. I started a red oak from acorn about 2 years ago, cut the taproot so it wouldn't spend all its energy on it, but even so it's hardly doing anything. They just seem like slow growers compared to other species.

I’ll post this as a place marker. I’m in but my trees don’t seem to want to give up the acorns yet. I’ll go look again this afternoon.

I'm pissed beyond belief. I just opened the package of overpriced seeds from eBay and this is what I found. All of them except 2 germinated, one of them was the one that had the bugs in as it is the only one I found a small hole on the side.

Killed all the suckers that came out, but I think I am not even going to try to plant them. Besides, my wife got the great idea of moving a few miles down the road to a newly built area, a better yard for sure for maples, but I don't think I will get the sun needed to push the black pines the way I do. And we will probably be moving out of the house by mid-end of November which means I am going to pull all the trees out of the grow beds and into pots. Placing a huge order from the Greenhouse Megastore probably for big plastic pots, unless home depot has them at a better price. Also, going to visit a few nurseries in case they have a few throw-away ones.

So, decided to join in on this one , I still have a lot to learn and tend to come here to read and pick up tips. Collected some American red oak ( quer cus  rubra ? ) from a tree at work, and some random acorns from near our village...if they sprout in the spring then I will make an effort to find out what sort of oak it is. I will go for a look around for some more at the weekendView attachment 513530View attachment 513531
So, collected some more from the tree near our village, definately English/ German Oak. Ordered some more from the Internet...Quercus petraea, Quercus faginea and Quercus pyrenaica 😀20231022_132114.jpg

What do you guys think? I contacted the seller about the issue with the acorns, there are 2 acorns that clearly have holes where the weevils went in... this is the message I sent him, and the reply I received. I'm just going to leave negative feedback, as I think he clearly is going to continue denying that it was his mistake. If he "float test" them, where did the dirt on the radicles came from? I think he just picked them up from the ground or bucket he stored them and package them without even looking.

Good morning,

I open the package today to sow the seeds and they were all germinating in the bag and full of bugs. I would like either new seeds sent, or a refund. As the seeds are almost certainly not viable anymore. The seeds looked germinating but fine when I removed the paper, but when I dropped them on the desk the bugs started to come out from inside of them.

Good afternoon

I dont have a clue where those bugs came from since there are none in the bag of acorns I have now plus i float tested all the them and there were no bugs in the water .

Everyone of those is a live and growing a root , nothing wrong with them so just plant them , They will grow fine . Ive been selling acorns and seeds for 20 years on here

If you have any questions, please post them in the other thread. This thread is just to officially enter the contest.

I’m so joining this, gotta keep myself committed to these trees somehow. I believe these are quercus rubra with how many have sprouted 2 tap roots and with my research into to trying to identify these as I collected them out on a walk, showed that red oaks were the only ones that commonly did that and I’ve got at least 4 out of the like 20 acorns I collected doing that. If anyone would be able to help/confirm the ID for these acorns down the road that would be great. All have been sown inside and have done fairly alright. Can’t wait to see everyone’s 5 year update.

Got 2 batches of acorns (around 30) collected from a forest in September. Hoping to cold strat over winter and hopefully a few will germinate
