Acer Ginnala styled

I like the original pot... at least color wise. During summer and spring, the pot allows the bright green leaves to really stand out, before drawing the eye to the trunk color. During the fall, it's the same, with the bright red leaves, and the neutral gray pot matching the trunk. The new pot doesn't seem to offer anything to the image in my eye.

Sergio, you said that you cut the tree back after all the leaves dropped in fall... what month did you cut back? November? Do you always do your harder pruning around this time? Just trying to get a better feel for your pruning regimen on your maples. It's something I'm not entirely comfortable with yet. I usually just prune after the first flush has hardened off. I've always been a bit hesitant to make major pruning decisions during dormancy for some reason.

yet again....

Blown. A. Way.

As far as maples go, MACH5 has to be the head druid.

Oh he so is!

When I die I’d like to be reincarnated as a garden ornament in his garden so I can stare at those trees 24/7. Although realistically I’m younger so unless I get hit by a bus tomorrow.........

I cut this maple back last October right after leaf fall. I have been changing some of my strategies. I cut back now in the fall right after leaf fall or thereabouts. This is to ensure dormant buds get activated and have the entire winter to develop and get ready for spring. All other work such as wiring is left for late winter or very early spring before bud brake. Some light wiring is ok in the fall. In areas with warmer winters I don't think it matters much at all.

Also, an excellent time to cut back maples is after they harden off in spring which usually around our area is between May and June.

Hope this helps.

LOL thanks guys but really if you want to talk incredible maples perhaps look elsewhere. For starters, in the US there is Mr maple himself Bill Valavanis. Then you got Walter, etc etc.

Thanks Sergio. I just screenshotted this reply so I dont have to search for, what has been, the most clear and succinct response on pruning a maple I've ever seen.

The red fallen leaves on the black stand and cream colored container is a great presentation demonstrating contrast.
Excellent.

Two years ago I took back a lot of this tree since I was not happy with the long and rather lanky branches. Took many steps back but now the overall structure is better, with shorter internodes and better transitions. The volume of the canopy needs to increase by about 15%- 20% more.

Here's the maple today.
