A 'yatsubusa' elm trunk

I dub this tree "Mr. Hankey". Hideeeeee hoooo!

JK of course...

What a monster! Let that too grow out for a bit, and you should have a nice tree with good movement and it doesn't have that exaggerated inverse taper you see on so many corners. You got a good one, and I have looked at his large Elms a few times and considered pulling the trigger. Good to see what one looks like after a few years!
Thanks,Eric.I got this tree for a real bargain from Brent.I especially like the huge clump yatsubusa he has on there now.
I am going to devote a lot of time to this bonsai.
You have a very nice tree in the making. I have had a lot of fun with these elms.

Thanks,Fred. You elm looks very nice and I am glad to hear a compliment from you,as I see a lot of your trees.
I have made a serious decision to persue bonsai over my long standing commitment to classical guitar and music in general.
That way I have time to give my trees more attention.
I will grow, cut and wire throughout the whole season as needed to really make an artistic tree;)
Now I need to do a search and see if your big elm from Brent is yatsubusa.

Buds poppin'.

I am glad buds are popping in the right spots:)
This tree has been budding from the bottom up.
For awhile I was worried as the bottom started first, but now buds on every stub I left clear to the top and then some.
Just two weeks later!

That's been my experience with a couple of yatsubusa I have from Brent. They bud everywhere, it's almost hydra-like.

Yup.I have another in the ground at about 2" trunk girth.I am going to propagate from it this year.
I would not mind having a few of these in the 12" tall bonsai range with say,2" trunk on them.
See how fast I can push the growth on cuttings.also air layering is cool too.

That budding is unbelievable. Looks like a fun tree since so much is happening. Have fun

Spring looks here to stay!

Spent some time looking at this tree yesterday to get a plan.
Decided for now ,what will be side branches and what will be the apical leader.
I am not going to remove unnecessary growth till' about 1/8" thickness. Then I will grow what is left into branches.
All branching will be built from the already existing stubs that I left back in March.Buds all over them:D
Tree is a foot tall.image.jpeg

Fascinating...

I love it.

I'd call it "shaven chewbacca"

Thanks for the words of encouragement.
I need to give myself a break and see the new Starwars.

That's a good photograph of the budding action.
Thanks Fred.I should of taken a picture of the back.It has a lot of branch starts to fill in some depth.

that is what my seiju looks like...repotted it and hacked it back...and 500 buds later...
I would like to see it Erb.I think these trees from Brent are fascinating.Or give it a thread.

That is unbelievable. Guess we know what you are going to be doing for awhile. Nice tree!

I can post it up on this thread...mine isn't from Brent though. Believe it or not I got it from a local nursery. I couldn't believe they had a seiju with a 2 in trunk! It has a slight reverse taper issue, but it's not so bad that I am wanting to change it.

that was after I cut it back and removed 75% of the foliage in late winter, then when it grew and popped 1000 buds, I took off most of the buds....now it's popping out with more buds! again!

Green everywhere.

I selected branches on my other yatsubusa, but I am undecided with this one if I should let them remain a bit longer to help the tree regain strength after the drastic cut-back from earlier this season.
This tree had to go through an emergency re-pot while in full leaf to a 50/50 mix of akadama and pumice because of the unnecessary white fluff from that mycorrhizal treatment.Drainage was affected big time.It is in a great mix now though and barely skipped a beat.
All the shoots are no bigger than 1/8" inch.My limit is about 3/16" than they have to be removed.
If I do it tomorrow ,the remaining ones will probably grow a lot faster.Just give it crazy fertilizer with every watering.
Most all the branches will come from the stubs I left,so some taper will be introduced earlier.

Here's a couple pics,previous and now.
A month apart.
