I checked the Pierneef style, i wonder if its doable with stone pine (umbrella pine) it’s natural growth habits are similar with slightly more curved canopy.

i had that problem with some lebanese cedars so you can add that to the list. I now jin all branches and cut after it heals.
Peter Warren said Azalea does the same thing. He suggested cutting the unwanted branches in stages. Gradually reduce the branches and possibly induce budding above the intended cut site but keep the buds on the small side to draw flow from the roots. Some large branches can take multiple years to remove.

With pine it can be tricky. Because balancing then energy and strength among branches is the key and with a canopy style, all the foliage is at the top while branches emerge from different locations on the trunk. It maybe difficult but give it try and let us know how it goes!

Hi Yan, did you ever give the stone pine a try in Pierneef - have been thinking about doing this myself
