Just for experiment and fun I wrapped this layer in regular potting soil. Seemed to root in the same amount time and incredibly easy to wash out.

Well done! Those are nice healthy looking roots.
I have not air layered, however, I ground layer with regular potting solid and it works fine every time.
And I agree totally with the ease of wash-out.

Nice. Always wondered about using potting soil as it retains tons of water.
