A New Tropical Setup

Here is what my setup looks like.
I use a 5 gallon bucket for the heater but any size container will work as long as you can submerge the whole heater in water. I am thinking about using a smaller container so I have more room in the tank. My lights are very expensive. Think I paid around $1000.00 for them a 5 years ago when I had my salt water tank set up. They are specifically designed for coral growth. 6 96watt HO compact florescent bulbs. It's hard to see but the one bulb only puts out a blue 440-490 nm color to promote growth.
These bulbs are long overdue to be replaced and should be replaced every year but I have not done it in a couple years. At $29-$40 a bulb I'm not looking forward to the expense especially since everything is growing so well now!

If you are looking for new light fixtures try aquarium stores and such. I used a place called ThatFishPlace.com and they have great prices on all sorts of lighting from 15 watt light bulbs to 1000 watt metal halide and very good pricing.

Very nice Kevster. Being an aquarium grower myself, might I make a suggestion for you. I've found that I've gotten better results from enclosing my aquariums in reflective material. Since my aquariums don't receive any natural light, the only light comes artificially from the top.

Here's one of the tanks:

It allows me to get great growth on my trees in a short amount of time. For example, here's a Willow Leaf shohin right before I put it in the tank:

And here it is maybe just a week and a half later:

Just some food for thought for you.

I've almost fully enclosed the setup. Gotta keep that light in the setup:

I have a sheet of mirrored plexiglas I was going to tape to my tank.
Actually I bought it as part of the new indoor setup I want to do but after reading and hearing everywhere about how white is better (even this post) I'm afraid to burn my plants. I know for a fact before I moved my tank where it is now it did much better with the lighting because I had painted some plywood white and put it on 3 sides of the tank. At the least I will be doing that!

I don't think you would have any issues with burning your plants...

I've got some "dormant" Willow Leaf Ficus (they've lost their leaves after being stressed) that have been leafless for a couple of weeks now. I know they're still alive as they're still green under the branches. I've found leaf drop to not be all too drastic with these, and I don't get concerned when it happens. I usually just find a way to get the trees in a humid area, which helps with recovery. So, I built this small greenhouse to place inside this big stand. It cost less than $30 and is so easy anyone can do it. Made out of simple PVC.

And leave it under the bright lights to let the trees recover:

What's the hose in the "shut the door" picture?

I'm up to the usual antics again. Using PVC and 2 mil drop cloth I've created another setup. Hopefully it'll help keep the area around the trees fairly humid.

We are ready to roll :D

Now you have a room full of glowing boxes! :D
