I bought this elm five years ago when a nursery went out of buisness (it seems if I visit a nursery they are doomed to failure). It might be ready to show in a couple more years. Suggestions (especially about future pots) would be appreciated.

Like Where you going, but when you planted It up higher you created reverse taper. You should plan it back lower.

or air/ground-layer it there to get an awesome nebari. I bet you won't really loose too much time, just a year of ramification, if that.

Too bad it didn't work out...but it's a solid reminder that ground layers aren't guaranteed to work 100% of the time. It's a risky operation that can destroy a tree.

True. However, this was my first attempt at a ground layer, so it was probably my error. At an y rate, I plan to try it one more time, meanwhile, shortening the root from the bottom up and finding a deeper pot.
