2016 US National Bonsai Exhibition

Hagedorn's forest is over 6 feet, but that's a one of a kind.

I'm guessing there were 20 to 25 trees about that size there. 298 total trees, but that includes shohin.

@coh could give you a better idea! He had to move 'em!

Bill did say, several times: "Bring smaller trees next time!"
LOL! I didn't hear him say that, but glad he did!

I'll tell you, the scariest set-up that I dealt with was the one from Dan Robinson. The cascade (fir or spruce, I think) in the green pot on the driftwood. The tree was heavy but one guy with a strong back (not me) managed it just fine. The problem was the driftwood "stand", which was very rickety. The tree sat on a metal plate that itself sat on 3 screws...the plate was barely large enough so it had to be situated just right. But the worst part was the driftwood, the front "leg" had broken off at some point and was attached by a single screw. When you set the tree down on it, the whole set-up buckled and you could see the strain on that one leg. If that had given way, the entire thing would have crashed to the floor. Fortunately it held, but I still get nervous thinking about it!

There were other trees that were so heavy, the entire table bent when they were placed. I wasn't involved in moving most of those, I know my limits...

Adair, please! You bring the wine, I'll bring the bourbon...we got this!!!!

I need to start hanging put with you folks more. Where do I get tickets to this party?

How about that huge wavy laminated "stand" with the tree somehow stuck in a broken egg shaped pot and balanced in there? One of the "creative" winners. (Thing is, the stand so overwhelmed the tree...).

Heck no! It appears he'll just have the booze just sitting out on the table!

Bring your own ice!

I am set then. I had a cooler full of 20 lbs of ice and water...to have something to drink because it was so hot in there and the vending machines werent taking dollar bills.

I was going to like this post until I realized any self respectin' suthenah should know that ice ruins the bourbon!! Sheesh!!

If it's as hot in there as it was this year you won't mind losing some self-respect.

It's pretty unusual for it to be that warm (almost 20 deg above normal) and humid up here in September, but with global warming, who knows what 2018 will be like!

Ok...mint juleps, it is!

Now guys, we have to behave at the show!! I have it on good authority that "The Boss" won't allow anything any stronger than McDonalds Iced Tea at the Show.

(We won't tell him what Tony Tickle kept in his water bottle! Lol!)

Well I am from Long Island, Long Island Iced tea is pretty innocuous, honestly......I swear.....

Creative is very good. How far do you go, the tree or creative display? In this case I think the tree took a backseat, IMHO.

Just would like to point out that tank God we have observant and smart eyed judge

Indeed. This raised some good questions for me. Execution was near flawless on the wood sculpture. But... for me I felt it was all about the display and not about bonsai. Interestingly the hierarchy was reversed. Display first, bonsai second. At least that was my read. I applaud the out-of-the-box effort but in the end it was like asking to show a piece of sculpture in a very creative manner. If you have already a good piece of sculpture (bonsai) does it need to be "drowned" within a creative display??

The creativity award went to both of Creighton's bonsai. The "floating" juniper forest was not as massive as the "wave " and much more refined. But the wave was larger and more impressive to those who only took a quick look
