Hi,

For reference...this fukien tea have about 3" to 3.5" base. It has the ugly "S" curve but I can live with it and it only cost me $115 + $25 s&h from eBay.

Some people tend to have problem growing fukien tea but mine thrives with minimal attention.

While both #1 and #2 looks good, I have a problem with the base/nebari. If you are willing to fix those, these can be nice. I just do not see myself spending that much and have that type of problem but it is your choice.

Good luck!

Thanks Dario! Makes total sense not to pay BIG bucks for a tree that has a big problem to begin with.

Even to me, the nebari looks like a mess. Thanks for pointing it out.

I am not in a hurry. Something will show up. I appreacite your advice.

Could they be very nice down the road? Sure. But not for that kind of money, no thank you

Those are quite pricey for what they are...
Both of the rain trees have ugly bulging roots that don't go out from the tree, but instead almost wraps the trunk. That can be fixed with time, but it seems like a lot of money for a tree with those problems. The Fukien has a major issue near the base... it has an hour glass shape. I would personally avoid it.
The tree that Poink posted looks a lot nicer fundamentally than the 3 you posted, and it was a fraction of the price.

Jim, Check your PM...I sent you a contact email to my tropical tree supplier. His prices are great and cheapest I can find. ;)

EDIT:

Seems like I created a problem for myself LOL... Igot numerous PM's already requesting the contact infor so I will just post it here. A cut and past of my message to Jim...

Hi,

Check this guy from Puerto Rico Alfredo Delgado <adelgado@bayamonpr.org> and ask him to send you pics of whatever you are interested on (including raintree) with asking price & shipping.

He has nice raintree for a fraction of what Wigerts ask for

You can tell him Dario referred you to him if you want. I cannot guarantee any transactions but mine are all been great.

Good luck!!!
Dario

Dario, thank you for taking the time. I have already written him. I apprecaite your help!!!!!

By the way, Alfredo has cheap newly collected trees (the ones I like) to super expensive ones.

I got from him (w/o any problems) the following:
5 - large logwood/campeche/bloodwood
3 - ficus salicaria/nerifolia
3 - buttonwood (1 is HUGE!)
3 - neea buxifolia
1 - tintillo

I bought from him more than anyone else. My only regret is not buying this raintree he offered me one time.

For $1000, you could buy a plane ticket to San Francisco or LA, go to a top bonsai nursery, and buy a $700 tree that would put any of these trees to shame. I'm being 100% honest.

I wouldn't pay even $200 for a Chinese mass-produced fukien tea regardless of how big it is - because they come off an assembly line and have absolutely no charm or character. The two raintrees are better, but just barely. #2 has a poor carbon-copy design that is inconsistent with the species - kinda like fitting a square peg into a round hole. It looks like a first attempt by someone who is just starting bonsai - definitely NOT worth $800. Maybe $250? #1 has the best design for a raintree... but the nebari is horrific. You'd have to buy the tree assuming you could do a successful ground layer since that would be the only way to fix it - and as people have pointed out, that is a TON of money to pay for a tree with horrible flaws.

You can do MUCH better for the money...

Are these three from Eric Wigert? Photos look as if they may be but these trees do not appear to have been worked on by Eric Wigert.

I watched Eric's demo during Rendezvous at Brussel's Bonsai this past weekend. He turns out very good trees and these three just do not appear to be his. I did not take Eric's workshop this year but plan to next year if he comes back to Rendezvous.

The La Croix soda can is their signature in their photos. That si my problem with Wigerts...they capitalized too much on his name and sell mass produced horrible "bonsai" trees esp on eBay (over priced IMHO too).

Interesting. While I enjoyed his demo and observing his workship, I have only bought one tree from Eric and sad to say I lost it this winter--a tropical and it did not like being on my sunporch. I blamed myself to the point of planning to buy a humidifier for the porch before winter this year.

Alfredo has a rain tree he had on eBay that did not sell. It's very nice compared to those two and was only about 350.

Sorry... Again no comparison:(
For the record, I NEVER compared mine to his. I just posted mine as a reference for what you can get for the price I paid. You read too much into it.

I am sure Eric makes great bonsai and have a lot of nice ones...just not the ones I see being sold. Sorry.

I have to agree with Stacy, Florida has some of the finest and cheapest tropicals I have ever run across. Check out Japan Nursery in Sanford Fl. he has some very nice tropicals for reasonable prices, not so much on his website, which he rarely updates, but if you call him he will assist you. I seen some nice Teas at his place that were less than $100.00 with 3 inch trunks. He had one with about a 5 inch trunk with a big dead spot on the side of the trunk in a large regular clay pot, about a gallon size, he was asking $59.00 for it because of the dead spot. I was almost ready to buy it but did not know how to deal with the dead spot. The canopy was at least a foot wide. He ships his stuff too. He had tons of Ficus and Scheffelera and Mimosa and some nice starter Catlin Elms for in 4 inch pots that were almost as big as my 2 yr old seed grown Catlins for less than ten dollars! Practically every where in Fl. there are great tropical Bonsai and pre-bonsai as its the perfect climate for them. I did find Wigerts and most of the better known sources down there quite expensive though, I guess that has to be expected with the reputation though.
