    Ironbeaver's Little Christmas Tree Entry

My entries are two lemon cypress, a bigger one with an interesting bend, and a smaller one that's a plant I see a literati in the future. I need to "get into" this one to see what I can see. Maybe a smaller informal upright. Should be able to bend the trunk a fair bit.

    New ficus "penjing"

I had a bad weekend and was feeling blue. After work I saw this guy in the convenience store window. Price was okay, but it needs a bit of work.the yellow area has the trunks fused/grafted together. The looks at the red arrows have also fused. The container looks like a plastic drawer or...

Should I give up on this Ficus Religiosa ?

I've had this tree for about 3.5 years and always struggled with it. It always seems to go through a boom and bust growth pattern, doing well for a month or two, then the leaves drop and it takes forever to recover. Not sure if it's environmental or pests or what. It might be ready for a re...

Are all tropicals suitable for indoor growing?

Stupid question but what makes a tropical tropical? Is it purely zone? Can any zone 10 tree be overwintered indoors? Zone 9? Zone 8? I know indoor growing is not ideal, that's not really where I want to go with this. Do some trees succeed only because they have waxy leaves for example?

    I'm blaming sorce for this.

It's not my fault. I was walking home past an art supply store. I have since discovered there is a studio that will fire clay A BLOCK FROM WHERE I LIVE. I have to get started sooner rather than later. I plant to focus on slab building.

    Monterey(?) Cypress playtoy

I picked up this "live Christmas tree" the other day to mess around with. If it seems to do okay in my solarium I'll keep it, if not and it lives till spring, I'll sell it at the club show. What was I thinking? I originally thought maybe a raft or clump. My initial poke through didn't...

    "Lemon" Cypress

I know. It will probably die in my solarium. I was bored and wanted to try it. It was cheap. I forgot to take a before. It was a bushy Christmas plant. After some initial cutting, it looked like this:I spent some time clipping and wiring and ended up with this: I removed the excess soil...

Bonsai Study Groups - How to do that thing you do.

I've been attending Bonsai Club meetings on a monthly basis, and am enjoying them. Sometimes I feel like doing more tree work with others, possibly closer to home (club meetings are held about an hour and a half travel time each way.) I've been thinking about getting a study group together and...

    Tree ID

I kept seeing this guy all the time at a local corner convenience store, among the mini citrus trees and garden vegetables. No label or price, I don't remember seeing flowers. Everything else sold, and it finally got labelled "xora". Google led me to believe they meant ixora, which works for...

    $5.00 Rescue Ficus

This sad little guy was sitting out front of a local convenience store. I felt bad so I brought him home. First up is a repot as he's currently in dirt. Then it will be backbudding and sorting out the roots. I THINK it's a tiger bark, can anyone tell any better?

    Myrtle purchases

It seems to be the time of year for these around here. I impulse bought this little one about a week ago while walking home from brunch. It was in a flower shop for $15. Why I like it: I wanted a Myrtle The lowest part of the trunk has a bit of movement and could be interesting What I...

    Bougie Styling Question

Hi! It's after midnight and I have insomnia. I thought I'd share one of my trees in development. This is a Pink Pixie from a cutting. I've been letting it go for over a year now, just slip potting it into larger container when necessary. I think it's getting ready to start it's spring...

    Ficus ID

So my work was throwing out some office plants. They had been stripped of leaves and left by the freight elevator for pickup. I hacked off a 4 foot section of trunk (couldn't take the whole plant, the pot was heavy and it was a multi-trunk) and brought it home (and looked like a freaking...

    Crazy bonsai experiments.

I just read @sorce 's post about hammering on bark to make it appear more aged. What are some crazy bonsai experiments you've tried that worked or didn't work? Newbies, have you thought of trying anything weird like using something from around the house/garage instead of actual bonsai stuff...

    Ficus variety pack

All my ficusses (ficii?) Ficus Religiosa from seed, two years old from seed. Too much cutting back, it got broken while living in my garden bed last summer. It got beat up by a draft over winter and is starting to recover. Its planted through an aluminum washer to hopefully ground layer it...

    My dwarf pomegranates

Taking photos today, I got these two last year as cuttings/young plants. They've put on a bit of girth, and a decent amount of roots. All I did when I got them was put them in larger pots, into fast draining sandy loam. They spent most of last summer being neglected on the window sill...

    Almost spring bougies

I took some photos of my trees today, mostly for my own reference. I thought I'd post them for opinions, advice and such. I've repotted some so far, mostly into bonsai pots (they fit better under the lights and my wife asked why I have "so many" bonsai pots but I have most of my stuff in...

    I think I avoided a mistake...

On Tuesday, while walking home from work I noticed a Hipster plant store (mostly air plants and terrarium stuff) had a Ficus Microcarpa in the window. Now, it was an S curve trunk, with all the growth on the top, but it had a 2" thick trunk and was about 14" tall. Couldn't see a price and the...

    New Red Bougainvillea

Picked this guy up the other night. Going to make lots of cuttings until I can get rid of the steel arch it's wrapped around. Might be able to get something out of it in a year or two. Currently planted in fluffy peat crap. Probably a big twisty tap root. Will these bud from a thick...

Taking a workshop, advice and discussion

I signed up to take a workshop in June (with Martin Schmalenberg) and I wanted to talk about any tips, advice, etiquette and such I might want to consider. One thing that's been playing on my mind is that I really don't have anything to work on that would fill the allotted time. The advice...

    Ground growing for a season?

So I managed to obtain a plot/raised bed in a nearby community garden (most have long waiting lists)! I plan on doing some tomatoes and such, but I also wanted to put some of my cuttings and seedlings in to grow for the spring and summer, then take them up in the fall to go back inside...

    Bougainvillea air-layer question

Can I air layer all the branches of this bougie at the same time and expect it to live (or will it bud back once the layers are in place?) I can't find a more up to date photo, but it is currently much more vigorous than this. Or should I just take all the branches off as cuttings and then...

    The wrong Oil-Dry

So last year I bought what turned out to be the wrong Oil-Dry, (NAPA 8822 isn't available in Canada) now I was still being cautious so I didn't put any trees into it, I just used it for some seed starting and cuttings. It holds up well if allowed to dry out between waterings, but turns crumbly...

    Bougie Plan

What do you think of my proposed plan for this bougie? It's been growing from an approximately 6" cutting (snapped off branch while testing flexibility) since about July of last year. It's starting to get a bit unmanageable for my smallish growing area. It seems well established in the pot...

    New training pots?

During a recent series of moves at work, someone threw out these cool looking mame/seedling sized mesh training pots: Can you believe they were using them to store paperclips?!?! Do you think I need to drill some holes in the bottoms or should they be okay as is?
