Here is my entry Corkbark Chinese Elm. Going to get in to a slightly larger pot and just let it grow for a while and thicken this bad boy up then chop it back hard and start over.

I think the second elm you have is a 'jacqueline hillier'? If I was you and you had the ability I would choose a leader and let it grow in the ground for a few years. This is what I did with mine 2 years ago and it is thickening up nicely and growing like crazy.

I think that prickly foliage is considered to be juvenile foliage. Junipers tend to create that kind of foliage sometimes. I don't know if it is because of stress or not enough light....which I guess would be a form of stress.

Was digging around in the soil and found a tag "Quillaja saponaria" looked on google and sure enough thats what it is. Still not sure if its suitable for bonsai or not if anyone does know that would be great. If not if anyone knows why would be great too :)
