Bonsai at work…

I'm sure the more experienced know this. But if you bring a tree in from out of winter storage, say to your office, to work on, remember that just a night or two of warm temperatures can begin the "waking up process" of a dormant tree. Cold tolerance will diminish, a week of warm nights and many species will have lost much cold tolerance. So with winter work on dormant trees, always get them back into the cold as quickly as possible. Even if you don't finish the days work, put them back in the cold for the night to keep them fully winter hardy. I'm in zone 5 and growing many species that are barely hardy here. This is not as big an issue for more southern growers rasing species that are hardy further north than they are. Just a thought to help.

My boss refused to let anyones hobbies migrate to work. While we had occasional slow times, the was always something needing to be caught up on. He even barked if he caught you web surfing. So I retired. Problem solved. ;)

I would if I could...someday. Also, my boss is 70 miles away.... I'd still bring the trees here if he worked at my location, but I'd likely be restricted to bonsaiing during my 1 hr lunch

job security

I thought about that.
Here's a view of what defines my job security! While dreaming of Bonsai of course. Copper. Ooooo the copper!

First day at work this week where I can come up for air...brought this one with me hoping to have a bit of down time. It's a wannabe JBP bunjin. I started thinning it out a few weeks ago and did a fair amount of needle pulling today. Now, it needs some judicious pruning and wire...which is at home:(.

Ever had to do needle pulling? As porcupine needle pulling from people's pets?

I actually have done that several times up in MA, probably over a decade ago...apparently no porcupines just north of Atlanta these days.

The first time I read this line, I read it as "He even barked if he caught you surfing" LOL! That's what comes from living in Southern Cal. I was thinking - where does he work that he can go surfing?

Did you coat the top with something different than concrete? Or did your mix have enough slump (water or chemicals to make it soupy) that the aggregate settled and the top is just the paste?

Looks cool, next you need to keep a more interesting form laying around at work, then when you have left over concrete, or mortar mix, you can produce more slabs.

Make a set of forms, make a latex cast of an interesting stone, or even a pot.
One of many suppliers here - http://www.bigceramicstore.com/tools-supplies/molds/mold-making-supplies-additives.html

For what it is worth, if you are in the mood to go nuts.

Absolutely!

The top on that was the bottom. In a plastic bin.....it settled funny and dodnt breathe well.

It would be nice to actually make something useful!

I am familiar with the latex to cast rocks for model railroads. A good idea!

Til the next miscalculated pour......
