CM BONSAI——-My Garden Activities

@stewarjm192
@misfit11

These are Zelkova Serrata…Japanese Zelkova tree.

These will be on sale during the season next year and through that following winter……all the ring-barking will occur in this coming Spring after preperations of the crowns during this winter.

THE GOOD NEWS IS THE ZELKOVA SEED IS VIABLE AND SPROUTING AT AROUND 50%!!

I plan on about a 50/50 mix of kabudachi style and also the taller single Broom style starters that are started in the shade to stretch the trunks to around 6-7” hopefully……….these will all be ringbarked for roots in the Spring outside…….When they settle I will start selling or perhaps let them thicken till later Summer.THEY WILL BE PLANTED INTO 3” grodan delta blocks after groundlayering.

A LOOK AT THE GROWHOUSE REORGANIZATION FOR THIS ALL THIS EVENING……I purchased another 6 oz. Of pine and zelkova seed to get an even start all the same time……The japanese black pine cutting in the left in quite strong light and the zelkova in more of a propogation strength so I can prepare correctly the crucial early stage the very short internodes and many branches.

Can see in the VERY TINY BROOM ZELKOVA PICTURE WHAT CAN BE ACHIEVED!!!
Just of course a taller trunk will be initiated this go around by starting in the shade.

Finally getting around to this zelkova crop of kabudachi and Broom style.

I CAME UP WITH THIS IDEA A WHOLE 3 YEARS AGO!!
glad to finally give it a go.

*** TALLER TRUNKS ARE DEFINATELY IN THE MAKINGS FOR THE SINGLE BROOM TYPE***
aside from the growhouse 1st pic……..all the zelkove pictures were from initial experimentation done November 2021 —- May 2022 ……..to see the possibilities.

THIS IS SERIOUSLY FUN GROWING!!!

The pine seedling cutting will be for sale right away in Late March or April…….Zelkova later on in the grow season.

Zelkova are finally underway…….Should have success with them since I tested this technique already.

As a former hydroponic and substrate grower I am thrilled to see you using all my old friends (though I dont like rockwool for seeding you obviously do!)

I have an aquaponic system at home with hydroton, and have grown things that people told my I couldn't.

Well done growing and being an RN.

Thanks……RN’s at home……I do not study that no more.I will change my bio

Checked your store -- Sold out!

Did you have any issue removing the pines (roots) from the rockwool? Did you peel apart?

LOTS OF ZELKOVA!!!

Out of 1/2 lb. of Japanese Black Pine seeds only about 5-700 sprout……which will equal about 3-500 cuttings🤨

The Zelkova seed is sprouting like champ,so that is the crop this season……..

I have been wanting to take the giant leap into an entire crop of Zelkova ………..here goes nothin’

I am stretching a flat in the shade to see how it goes for Traditional Broom subjects.

Lots of stubbier and branchy ones will fill the growhouse for air-layering the kabudachi.

If the test flat in the shade of my mainly north window in the home produces very good length to the trunks……I will make more of them too.

I plant a flat or two per day…Growhouse will be full in a couple weeks with Zelkova!!!

So as stated in post#101……..definately Zelkova!!!
They are awesome and quite maneagable in the grow…..being smaller statured starters.

By the way...

The video series that @cmeg1 mentioned learning a lot of his info from, the Harley Smith master series, is now free on YouTube. Many of the videos are applicable even if you do not grow hydroponic. It is well worth your time to play them in the backround while you work on trees, at least.

Gunna throw anything on sale soon Curtis? I haven't been around much lately, but feels like it's been a while.

I am growing……have some zelkova and pines……not till later season though……pine seeds were duds so had to plant zelkova and they take longer..
Thanks

@cmeg1 Were the dud pine seeds JBP or JRP? Were any of the JRPs successful?

Got some impressive growth out of my black pines last year! I always compare them to seedlings I see online or on the auction pages of the same age and you can clearly tell the difference between @cmeg1's propagation/grow method and "normal" propagation.

This is from April of 2024

And now, one week short of exactly one year later

Already getting a pretty good base

Is it common to start getting cones on seedlings this young or is that just how pumped of nutrients they are?

Can't wait to get more when they're ready!

This production method is fantastic. I managed greenhouse substrate production for years. (Tomato, cucumber, hemp and bulbs.)
The Zelkova look stunning as do the pines. Blue light is fun to play with.

I am not questioning or doubting the successes but just questions.

Do you have any concern about the rockwool at the base of the tree since it will not degrade?
Will it become insignificant over time considering the nebari is of primary significance?

I have a few JBPs from @cmeg1 and the rockwool eventually just breaks up as the nebari swells. My pines are healthy and vigorous and I have not bothered to actively remove any of the rockwool it has just broken down in the substrate.
