Looking for advice on pot selection for this shimpaku for Spring. I am trying to make this into a windswept style. I am considering a crescent pot, but not committed to that idea. The tree is 23 inches from soil level. Likely 24-25 once nebari exposed.

Appreciate any input.

A Siberian elm:
Trunk width: 2 inches
Total height: 7 inches
Current pot height: 3 inches
Current pot width: 10 inches

Chinese juniper:
Trunk width: 1 inch
Total height: 8 5/8 inches
Current pot height: 3 3/8 inches
Current pot width: 8 inches

I consider these in refinement stage and they are currently in oversized pots for the shohin style I wanted to go for.

I don't want to go too aggressive pruning roots to jam them into smaller pots.

I can’t really speak to the juniper, but I like the unglazed rectangle for the elm. It will really play up the masculine old man elm feel that the tree is giving. Would have to see a realistic virt to know if the size is right but seems close.

I recognize that Elm! You bought that from me this last fall! Glad to see it doing ok. Would love to see you start a thread on it so I can follow along.

In regards to pot. I think that juniper should stay in a grow box, where as the elm could easily go into as masculine an oval pot as you’ve got. I think the blue would be nice.

Hey stranger! Thanks again for the amazing tree. I would be happy to get a thread started. I also liked your proposed angle change in a repot and am considering it.

I was also leaning towards the blue oval in top center.

I will give the Juniper some more thought. Perhaps a few seasons in a large pond basket are needed.
