    Chinese elm issues

Even though we have mild winters in Malta, Chinese elms still drop all of their leaves at least mine have always done. Only one i've got at the moment is in the ground but had ones in pot before and always dropped their leaves. Re soil, where have you sourced akadama in malta if i may ask?

SI have decided to go back into bonsaiNut seclusion.ee ya guys.

My Brother too took his own life around 10 years ago, on the eve of his 18th birthday. It left a deep hole in my family, one that can never be filled. C'mon Smoke. I'm sorry your wife had to go through what she did. 99% of users here are. Don't shoot your principles because of the other 1%. This...

    From seed to bonsai

It is. Seems like it's getting leggy. I always like to give them an hour or two of morning sunlight. Also beware of damping off. Since you used organic soil, not watering too much and keeping a good air flow is imperative against this disease.

Field growing vs colanders, raised growing beds?

Thanks @bleumeon for the detailed answer. Us amateurs always apreciate such input from someone working in the professional world of our hobby. If i can add my 2 cents to the argument, my way of doing things is a mix of both the ground and colander method. Quite similar to what @penumbra and...

My Nellie's participation in the JBP Contest

We're a bit short on trees where I come from. :D In fact, I gathered hundreds of aleppo seeds, those not using for bonsai purposes will go to a local tree growing project, so short on trees we are! :o

My Nellie's participation in the JBP Contest

Any updates on the seedlings Alexandra? I'm curious, as a fellow Mediterenean dweller and since you mentioned Aleppo pines in one of your posts, why didn't you do Aleppo seedlings too? I'm trying out seeds, seedlings, and cuttings next year and was thinkng of doing both JBP and Aleppos.

Bonsai Nut's personal pine entry thread

Understood. Thought the hot water was used to weaken the outer shell of the seeds, thus scarifying it in more simplistic way. Thanks for the explanation. ;)

Is the soaking/scarifying process done before the cold stratification or after?

Is Bonsai Mirai Live Worth $300/year?

This thread seems to have escalated into something few want or care to read. Back to the bonsai related subject, I haven't bought Mirai's subscription, and for that, I don't have an opinion whether it's worth it or not. No Mirai subscriber has posted on this thread claiming it isn't worth it...

    Black Pine Seedling Cuttings

Judging from what Mark did there, he's basically repotting his seedlings a couple or 3 times during the first growing season right? once when the seedlign is cut and 1 or 2 more times further on to balance and spread the roots.

    Shohin Aleppo pine

First off, I live in Malta, a tiny island beneath Italy. Our climiate is probably kinda warmer. As far as Aleppos go, I've been into them for 5 or 6 years, I've got around 12 or so, all growing in the ground. The ones i did repot however were 2 year old seedlings who responded to bare rooting...

    Shohin Aleppo pine

nice specimen. Around where i live, Aleppo's are the only pines you can spot here and there. Quite hardy and as you rightly find out, can flush 2, 3 times a year, especially if ground growing and heavy fertilizing. Belgium might be a bit cooler so probably 2 flushes will do. attached are a...
