On a whim, I stop by a nursery while drinking my coffee one morning and just took a look at what they had. It's a mom and pop shop and they had a good variety.

Some zelcova

Base of the thicker zelcova - better one, though it does look like a graft

Slippery elms

Princess elm and american elm

Monster Hollywood juniper

Some Baldy's

that a deodar cedar? Not terrific bonsai, but workable.

Wouldn't touch any of these.

I wouldn't dismiss nursery stuff too fast - I've made some great tree's from crappy material, just think outside the box - here's just a few that come from disregarded cheap material. These are older pics but the image can be there. Time, skill, and willing to work is all your need, granted that comes with not everything is good but some

If you see a tree in there, I agree. Myself I don't experiment with Nursery stock over 100USD but I do and will...

I would offer them 50USD cash for that one, I bet they go for it.

They might, but I'm leaning towards no as I have a lot of trees and I really don't need another right now. Was really just showing mom and pop places have more variety then big box stores

Nope. Ain't gonna take $50 for it. :D

I love nursery stock too, but these don't jump out at me as being particularly workable. That zelkova could be chopped, but I'm guessing the full sized tree price you'd have to pay might not be worth it - the trunk's not really interesting enough to justify any kind of premium.

The one for $195 is OK, but not for that price. It would probably be much better if the initial part of the trunk were about half that height. If I pay > $100 for nursery stock, the base better be great. This could be fun to experiment with, but like @GrimLore, I probably wouldn't pay more than about $50 for it.

What he said. I'm not dismissing nursery stock. Just didn't see the ones you showed in the original post to be interesting or worth the cost. Most of my material are nursery stock. A few, I collected.
