I assumed it was hot out in California but watching the weather last year it always seemed to be in the 80's while in Ohio it was getting upper 90's when it got hot or did not rain.

Tuan lives in the Inland Empire. It doesn't rain from February through November. We're not talking about little rain - we're talking not a drop of rain for 8 - 10 months. Highs in the 100's easily for weeks. He's just one valley over from Palm Springs

Yes I know they are different plants, I was comparing how my Chinese Quince definitely needed a cooler place too.

Since you are talking about the Chinese quince. I have this Chinese quince since 2/2009 (almost 6 years!!). Thanks Si to dig this one for me!
It has 5 1/2" diameter at the root flare and 12 1/2" in height. It has been growing very well!

It has been raining in my area since this afternoon.
In spite of rain, I still got out of the garden and found this plant was blooming!

Even tho quince is the second bloomer following Ume (apricot) they certainly seem earlier this year. My contorta quince is full of blooms half open already. Usually it's about 3 weeks later here in Washington state from previous years.
I did some looking into the rest of the next months extended weater forcasts trying to figure out timing for repotting this year, yet fearful for a late hard frost. But if the weather guys know what's happening correctly, it doesn't seem so.....

My pleasure Dick. I will let you see the other small quince very soon. It is having a lot of flower buds at this time.

It's strange. My ume bloomed about 2 weeks late comparing to the previous years, but small quinces started blooming early this year (the big quince is still sleeping at this time).

I'll let you see the progression of this flower bud. Please pay attention to the slight reddish edge where the arrow pointing in.

The dates of those pictures from 1st to the 5th one are 1/22/15, 1/23/15, 1/25/15, 1/27/15 and 1/28/15 respectively.

This afternoon, this particular tree started blooming more. It is from air layer about 2 years ago.

Chojubai has one flowering bud!



To Dick Benbow: I found it has lot of spikes on the outer part of the branches. Not in the inner parts. Did you remove the spikes in the inner parts? (I did not see any cut marks). Thanks.

It is interesting to see the color of the filaments are same color of petals accordingly.
