I dont understand how you get such good fall color! Is it related to the health of the trees?

The yellow one is the last picture is just stunning

Joe, a big part of it is trying to keep leaves in good shape. This, as you know, can be challenging with Japanese maples specially in hot weather. If leaves get scorched, they'll either drop early or their color will be poor.

The yellow maple is one that I have been experimenting with as far as light exposure. In past years when placed under more direct sun, it colored up bright red. In the last couple of years it has been under considerably more shaded conditions which made it turn bright yellow. I have not yet been able to achieve quite as dramatic change of color with other trees. I will be sure to post updates in the maple thread soon.

You need a WeeCuan to mess up the place a little.......:p:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

Japanese maple husbandry on the highest level. Thanks for the peek at the peaking!:mad::D:D:D:D:D:D;)

LOL!! You are right but the wee Cuans are not so wee anymore. Now I have dogs that quickly let me know what they think of the garden by occasionally peeing and pooping in it!:mad::mad::p:D

I've actually noticed the same thing on my silver maples except opposite lol. The ones that get more shade and protection from wind always go red-purple and everything in between. The trees that get full sun went pale yellow.
Weird

Hmmmm interesting!!

Sweetgum. The color this year isn't as intense as previous years, maybe it is still getting better. We'll see.

This is a club auction tree that I picked up for about $20 a couple of years ago...it was bought so I could experiment and learn about the species in pot culture while another one is developing in the ground. Unfortunately, two winters ago it lost almost all of the secondary and tertiary branches, so I'm rebuilding the structure. Maybe next year I'll start trying to figure out how to reduce the leaf size.

Not sure what the front will be, so a view from both sides.
