Acer Palmatum "Arakawa" (Japanese Maple "Arakawa") #105

That looks awesome. Clump styled as windswept is going to be aces.

aesthetics are always so subjective...to my eye those trunk are far too straight to ever make a convincing windswept...and it is doubtful at this point that they could be shaped easily or well. If it were mine, I would be standing them up so that the middle trunk is near vertical. Again IMO windswept style is often tried but very rarely executed well.

Air layered the upright branch that needs to come off. Trying to force rooting with a tourniquette below a node. Thick wire holds the air layer in place.

Looking good!!!

So brought this out today to check in on and do some seasonal work. I anticipate a good growing season this year since it has stabalized and really put on some good extension growth. Initially I was only going to fertilize but after looking it over.....

One if of the key decisions I am making is changing the front. In the previous front, the largest trunk was between the two smaller ones and was the middle trunk but placed in the back of the clump. I am going to use the back of the tree as the new front so the larger trunk will be placed out front. The next issue is the now left most trunk which is thinner but taller. I am going to let that trunk grow out unrestrained to get thicker than the middle trunk.

With this change, the middle trunk had a taller section which would ultimately cross the future taller left trunk. Added an air layer to this taller section which has some nice movement on it. So there are two air layers on this arakawa now. The first one got a tourniquette only and is now starting to get cut off. The new air layer was ringed. I expect to see roots on both by mid-summer. Ill separate in august and pot them up at that time.

I also took a bunch of cuttings from this about 3 weeks ago. Pictures to follow.
