What kind of cut? You mean flush with the trunk?

Does that remnant of a cut need to go, or does it add character? Thanks.

    Root Growth

Thanks, but I'm looking for trees ~2" trunk or more. Btw, those photos look like generic ones, and so I can see when you said you aren't sure you get the 1 inn the photo.

Where? I've bought from a field-grown place, facebook bonsai groups, and ebay, though rarely.

    Root Growth

Thanks. No, I don't think any nearby helpers. Should this be done at the start of the growing season, or is spring / summer ok? I will have to study the technique before risking the tree.

    Root Growth

All at once, or could I do it with 1 big root? Is it risky?

    Root Growth

I have a trident with roots above the soil, leaving an air gap. Not what I want. If I cover the roots and scrape off some cambium under the soil, would roots grow there? Anything else I could do? Thanks.

    Rootbound?

This is a trident maple. I've been letting the new leader grow, untouched, to thicken it. The leader is about 6 feet tall. There are no new shoots on the leader and all branches. I have a Japanese maple that also has a 6 foot leader, and it is still exploding with life on every branch. I...

    Wood Filler?

To reduce the diameter of the hole being used for thread grafting, other than toothpicks, is no-shrink wood filler ok? Thanks.

    Cutting Back All At Once?

Ok, mixed message. Several have said to do it all at once, but then another opinion is to do it 1 section at a time. I've completed the cutting, but made sure a few leaves remained on each branch. Hopefully it will be ok.

    Cutting Back All At Once?

That will leave very little foliage. It is healthy so will give it a go. I do have 1 thread graft near the top that will go untouched this year.

    Cutting Back All At Once?

Here is the result from pruning. [I need better background for my photos.] The top is now the size desired. But should I cut it down more, so that new buds will appear closer to the trunk, so to get ramification. If I leave it as is, new buds will pop near the ends of the branches only, right...

    Cutting Back All At Once?

The bottom branch is well, above 1/3 of the tree height. I guess that's not always applicable, but it does better if more height. And yeah, I was wondering if the bottom branches would be abandoned if the top is unchecked. I guess I would prune them back after I re-check the tree proportions...

Thanks. Oops on double post. Can I remove it somehow?

    Prune All Branches At Once?

I have a Syberian elm that is very vigorous. All branches are where they should be, so i just need to shoot for ramification. Is it safe to cut back all the branches, or should i spread them out. The top will be left untouched as I am trying to make taller the tree. Thanks. (poor photo)

    Tridents- Buds Between Nodes

Secondary buds on many feeder branches have already opened. So there are 2 bud pairs opened and growing in total, at each node. I was wondering if I remove both those leaf pairs so I can fit the branch in the drilled hole, can a third pair sprout from those nodes on those feeder branches on the...

    Tridents- Buds Between Nodes

Thanks. How many buds are there per node? I want to do a thread graft, but secondary buds at each node start to grow very quickly, and I don't know if 2 or 4 secondary buds will pop up.. So being too late I missed an opportunity to thread graft because of that. Someone here said there can be a...

    Tridents- Buds Between Nodes

Are trident maples able to push out new buds between nodes, or are they like Japanese maples which do not? Thanks.

    When Safe To De-Leaf?

POCD? My trident is ~ 12". I have the top branch (now leader) at about 6 feet in height, growing untouched to get it thicken up. Sounds like there could be the issue you mentioned, that resources would be used for that leader and not a threaded branch? I will check later, but I don't think the...

    When Safe To De-Leaf?

Tridents you can graft any time, right? The secondary buds seem to pop very soon after the original ones leaf. Actually, how many leaves are there at each node? Seems 6 maybe. If so, when those 6 open, there is nothing left at that node?

    When Safe To De-Leaf?

Yeah, I have a few redundant branches to choose from. So if it dies it won't hurt the over all design. Thanks.
