Ficus Repots, warm min temp or humidity more important?

I'd keep it in the warmest and brightest spot possible. No partial shade. You can always mist it if you are worried about humidity.

    Year of the Premnas

I am fairly new to this particular species- got the exposed root one about in February. They check a lot of boxes... Do well inside under lights, fairly tolerant of "loose horticulture"- random temperature changes, watering habits, tolerate styling well- either wiring or clip 'n grow, etc. I...

    Year of the Premnas

I recently got in to this species with an exposed root Premna. Scored a few more from Mike Lane. Two more humbler shohin/mame sized ones are sitting on my benches growing. Oh and I just bought 4 more but they are likely for sale later this year. 🤣 🤣 The first ones are in pots finally...

Everybody needs a friend. BC and Elm

I've put some of this up on other social media... Made some noble efforts to get some trees repotted this spring. This one didn't happen. Just couldn't find a pot that clicked for me so now it's on the "Pots to make" list. I've also been trying to get these "volunteers" relocated. This one...

Pheww that was a close one! Popped in to say howdy!

FB went down and I almost had to come back here! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 Been away a long time. Been through major freezes and record heat summers and a battle with the Big C. Lost a lot of my collection and now rebuilding. Missed a few seasons of collecting but managed to dig some things this year. A...

    Pea Gravel Thoughts?

Waste of material that contributes nothing to health of the tree and only occupies the limited space in the pot.

    Large Bald Cypress bonsai

Most of what I learned about BC collecting is from Gary Marchal. Collecting bald cypress is like making really big cuttings. I do most of the root work right after collection as long as I get a good "root ball". Realize that sometimes there are multiple "bases" going on from varying water...

    Spiderman BC

Gentle stroking for sure! 🤣 Young green shoots can be gently massaged from the trunk juncture between your thumb and index, bend squeeze motion to change the angle to horizontal... Twigs that are just starting to lignify a bit will give you the soft crackle. You can feel it if not hear it...

    Spiderman BC

You can also start to gently "massage" branches from the base out into horizontal positions. You'll hear a gentle crackling as you move out towards the tip.

    Species Study - Taxodium distichum

I let shoots grow like crazy for a while to strengthen the new roots then periodically edit out shoots I know will never be needed. Balances out the strength of those lower down.

    They always look so unkempt

I swear they always look better in real life! Record temps here in the Houston area, I've kind of left them unmolested to minimize the stress. They are a bit late in going into the shade.

    Species Study - Taxodium distichum

This is one of my spots. These trees are all the same age. Some were planted to be submerged (this canal's level gets dropped periodically) and others in the heavy clay of the bank. The ones on the bank are 1/2 the size, about 12-16" versus 27". Also you can see the lack of buttressing on...

    Species Study - Taxodium distichum

There was an old ABS journal article- could have been Dave Degroot- fastest way to develop seedlings is basically what would now be a hydro system- continuous flow of nutrient through the bed.

(5-year Native Tree Challenge) TinyArt's Sida ulmifolia

Get it out of the water and into soil and in the shade. Blooms are no indication of health. They are doing what they are pre-programmed to do.

    Help with Bald Cypress

No, it is best for getting a good base angle and starting a natural "droop". Not going to get you a "weep". As I move through my benches, doing the meditative nip and tuck thing, its just another little maneuver that gets me ahead. Sometimes when you try and correct a base with wire, the...

    Help with Bald Cypress

I use the "massage method" for green shoots - as I walk down the bench picking at things- especially to get the shoot base at a good angle. Eventually you hear that gentle crackle from the branch lignifying and you know its taking... I follow up later with wire.

    Help with Bald Cypress

I use the term interchangeably for branching and foliage. A lot of times it goes hand in hand. BC are most happy when their toes are cool and wet. Explosive growth with long "feathers". Challenging to make a really exceptional shohin- that's why you never see them and it makes yours that...
