    New Chinese Elm Material

Thanks for the input! I have only used lime sulfur with one other project so its good to know that if I use it once it won't stay bleach white forever. As for the branch location I agree that it really isn't the best. I think that when I repotted it I was a little nervous to cut back the...

    New Chinese Elm Material

Well I wasn't able to get great photos of the tree (even though I tried) after this past weekend's bonsai class so I took a video...in my bathroom...so I could get some good light on the tree. I mostly focused on the trunk which showed a little rot on some of the stilt roots but I think I...

    One year In.

I am less than but almost 1 year into bonsai but, like you said bonsai blake, the journey has been amazing so far! I have been fortunate enough to not lose any trees so far *knock on wood* but I definitely had a close call with a little chinese elm. I have definitely acquired a ton of trees so...

    New Chinese Elm Material

Thanks so much for the response Bunjae! The wood rot idea had crossed my mind as well when I was looking at it at the nursery but the wood still seems to be pretty hard and it may appear dark in the photo as I had just watered it. But I will keep an eye out for rot as I removed the moss and...

    New Chinese Elm Material

I purchased, what I believe is, a chinese elm the other day. It has been neglected a little and there is some dead wood on the trunk that will need to be addressed. This leads me to my first question...is creating dead wood a good idea on a chinese elm? I haven't seen much of it in my research...

    Want Chinese Elm Tiny Leaves

Ryan is right. I bought a larger chinese elm the other day and was doing some research on decreasing leaf size and the internode distance (space between the leaves). My number 1 resource, if I can't get to my bonsai group, is brent from evergreen garden works. Not only does he have EXCELLENT...

    I'm selling my collection

Jay, I went looking through your old forum posts to see the trees you had shared with the forum and I have go to say you have some absolutely beautiful trees that you have clearly taken the time to grow and develop. From the threads I was able to find and the pictures of trees you posted here...

Thinking about making my own soil...

Thank you guys very much for your thoughtful replies. I will be reaching out to people in my area who have good experience with the conditions and who know my watering habits a little better. When I finally get a mix together I will let you guys know. Thanks!

Thinking about making my own soil...

Thank you very much Martin. I will definitely message Sawgrass and see what he recommends for the area. Do you mind my asking why you're bailing on the turface??

Thinking about making my own soil...

That's a little far for me, about 4 hours north. But next time I make my way up to Orlando area I'll try and jump over and take a look at the nursery. Heard great things and I think it would be worth the trip to see the facility and pick up some pre-bonsai stock.

Thinking about making my own soil...

Would probably be helpful if I told you guys what I do for a living haha. I'm currently a dental student so, with the exception of weekends, I'm away from home for the majority of the day so I would probably have to lean towards a predominantly organic mix.

Thinking about making my own soil...

Haven't checked it out yet but it sounds like the components are more or less in line with the idea that I was shooting for. Thanks for the advice! I figured that might be the case, but was really just hoping for guidance (I hope the direction of this thread doesn't change). I appreciate...
