I'm curious...my friend has a Paul's Scarlet Hawthorn...I've always admired his hawthorn. Looking for a manageable size one...Kifu/Chuhin maybe?

Indeed...just when I say I'm over flowering bonsai. Spring arrives in the UK and I drool at his tree. This year it got a repot and trim. So no flowers. But, I've got his photo in my album. And can't help but think of how pretty it is. The colors are so much more than the white variety I've seen. New England bonsai has the white flowering one in a serpentine trunk. They have another listed that...looks almost like a trident...it's leaf looks nothing of my friend's tree.

These are so cool.Pretty rare to find bonsai of them in the states.
I just bought a 5 gallon ‘pauls scarlet’ from Forest Farm in hopes of propogating it this season.I have seen many pictures of even smaller ones that look cool.
I bought a t5 flourescent and propogater and heat mat to help the cuttings as I read they are a bit tough to prpogate.
I am reading up on best harmone to use....Hormex recommends Hormex 8 which is a bit stronger.

Email Brent at Evergreen. He may have something hiding somewhere. I've always wanted one as well. I think Hawthorn may be my favorite species and the flowers are amazing. There is another variety you might look for. Crataegus laevigata "Crimson Cloud"

They are in the rose family....rosaceae ,Probably regular fungicide use when not in flower......save the bees

I actually tried to buy from Brent,as I have gotten outstanding 1 gallon Pauls Scarlet from him before,several years ago,but he said he has only very limited stock ,if any, that Will only be ready in summer.

The Crateagus x Media are actually hybrids on the common hawthorn and laevigata,probably why they are more vigorous.That is what Brent offered in the past and also what I got from Forest Farm

He got back with me...nothing ready anytime soon...but I will wait him out when he has some...I will snag one up. Its not a necessity...its more of a novelty for the bloom. Thus...I am willing to wait.

I have both the Paul's Scarlett and the Crimson Cloud that I got from Forest Farms a few years ago. I've been letting them grow out so I can take cuttings for a forest of each. They have both grown well and this spring I will be making at least a dozen of each. I took two cuttings last year, one of each, and both took. Nothing fancy, just cut them off and planted in pumice fines. I'm sure I will have several extra cuttings of each by fall of this year.

I was curious,does Forest Farm graft their Hawthorns or were they cuttings?
I am assuming you got gallon size pots,or were they 5 gallon?They said size of 5 gallon were 5-6’ so was just wondering how established yours were.

I was lucky enough to find a chuchin sized one up on auction last year. You are right, they are super hard to find, I've been looking for several years.

Good for you Judy! I didn't even see it. Which means...it was meant for you! It is something I am willing to wait for. My skin isn't itching from not having one. But...the day I aquire one...it will be a sweet day
I heard the graft ones are horrible to sucker. So that you had success with cuttings is great, for I also heard success with air layers is not usually successful.

It's a fugly thing right now, maybe when I get some flowers this year if I do (I've only had it since last summer.) Another reason you'll have to stop by sometime, lol...
