I've had this Holly Oak, Quercus ilex for a few years. It has nice bark, thick trunk, good branching.... and horrible roots. Decided yesterday to do something about it.

You did the right thing to try and make a better tree. I have a tree with a similarly ugly base and i'm too chicken shit to try the layer... Good on you for going for it!
 
Air layers are a little intimidating, but I have never had one fail! Just do it, Haha!!!

seems a little late in the season but I see you're in Cali, should have plenty of time in that case. Nice tree, should look great afterwards
 
Update. I checked progress and no roots... just a big callus. So I recut, applied more Clonex and will try again. 🤞

Ha! I saw the roots. I thought that was a snake wrapped around the trunk. Good correction you made.
