Last week, I had the pleasure of having Mauro Stemberger spend the day here in my garden. I had him style a couple of trees, do a critique and discuss future development of some of my bonsai and even repot a large RMJ, which originally came planted as a cascade and repositioned upright making for a dynamic informal upright with two apexes in the future.

I found Mauro to be professional, knowledgable and very easy to talk to, fielding questions easily as he worked. It was a pleasure to have him over and watch one of the best at work.

His preference by far are conifers so made sure I had a few ready for him to work on. One such tree was a Colorado blue spruce that I purchased about 4 years ago from Todd Schlafer. I am attracted to the species mainly for its heavily plated, beautiful bark full of character. They are also incredibly tough trees that do not need any winter protection. This tree is said to be roughly 250 years old with beautiful mature bark all the way into the branches. For a few minutes we discussed the styling plan and after agreeing, Mauro went to work.

During the past couple of years I had been preparing this tree for its first styling by fertilizing it abundantly and gradually cutting away thick branches that I knew would be of no use in the final design. The tree is strong and buds back with relative ease as is the case with healthy blue spruces. One reason that makes this species so desirable for bonsai!

Photo that Todd sent to me back in 2013, two years after collection.

The tree in my garden about a year later in 2014.

August 2016.

First styling with Mauro! Sadly I failed to take a before pic but the August 2016 photo above gives one a good idea of what the tree looked like before the work began.

The completed work for now. Next year I plan on repotting it into a much smaller unglazed oval pot. I look forward to its continued development.

Looks great:D! By chance did cutting of many branches/foliage nearly cause heart attack:confused:?

Well not really. I knew it had to be done and was expecting it since we had discussed the styling plan. The tree is misted several times a day to help it recover.

HEY GIGS GLAD IT CAUGHT YOUR ATTENTION!!! :p I love these blue spruces. They are quite easy to grow and need no winter protection. I pretty much forget about them and come back to say hello in the spring. Same with my RMJs.

The tree has a nice powerful flaring base that's hidden with moss at the moment. I need to get in there with vinegar and clean it all up.

Love the bark. Its going to be really nice in 5-10 years as branches thicken and you tighten the foliage pads and fix the negative space. The future is very promising with this one.

Yeah my blue spruce stays outside all year round, even if it drops to 0 degrees F, thing just keeps on ticking

Sergio, I'm curious about something. You've had the tree for several years now, so I'm sure you've thought about styling options many times. Did you have something different in mind, or was the result similar to what you were thinking before Mauro had a chance to evaluate the tree?

Thanks Don! Yes the bark is awesome! Needs to fill in. The top third at the back is basically bare with one thinner branch that needs quite a bit of development to address (at least in part) the big negative areas up top. Many of the branch tips are blunt and coarse and needles need to be reduced in time.

love the tree! I almost didn't believe Mach5 was posting an evergreen instead of a maple! ;)

LOL! This is changing. Certainly not giving up on maples (or deciduous species), but moving a bit more aggressively towards conifers. I have a few nice collected ones but they are slow in getting them ready to be worked on. I brought in Mauro as he is a conifer specialist and see and understand first hand the what, how and why when dealing with one.

Chris, yes I had thought about it but more or less it ended up where I was expecting. It looks like some trees I have seen in Italy and Spain. I have a strong tendency to like trees that look like miniature versions of the ones you see in nature rather than the ones that are more abstract ie. Kimura's junipers. Mauro did end up giving the tree a stronger and decisive lean to the left which I liked. I had left two options for possible ways to go for the apex. Mauro explained his choice which made sense within the context of the general design direction.

Not to be critical (because it is an awesome looking tree), this is more of an observation to help me and maybe others learn. The tree seems very heavy on the left side. I have been given guidance on more than one occasion by more than one respected artist that there should be balance in the design when creating bonsai. Is this something you're going to address with time? Was it brought up by Mauro during his styling? Thanks!

I think it will balance out as the tree recovers and grows, time and care!

All trees will look like this on the initial styling Vin,I don't believe there is such thing as instant balance n perfection.
