Here is my Chinese Elm I grew from a seed.

I had a thread based on a possible fungal issue I had, but I wanted a complete thread for the whole life of this tree.

Intermission: Had some problems with a fungus or something, but got past it with the help of my fellow b-nuts.

It kept falling over, so I ended up chopping the main trunk.

If you plant it into the ground, within 3 years it can push to 2-3 inch caliper. With massoive cut scars of course.

I grew in in a large container, which also resulted in 6 or so foot extentions in a year, really ainding the bulking up phase.

2 (as usual stupid) questions:
Large container means 5 gallon or more? Wonder if doable in my balcony..
Would bridge grafting help with healing big cut / chop scars?

I made 3-gallon boxes for a couple of my trees, but they might be too large. I bet they would be perfect for larger, collected trees. The 3 gallon boxes were roughly 5.5 inches tall x 11 inches wide (14cm x 30cm), if I remember correctly.

Ground growing is not an option for me right now because we will likely be moving soon. I will keep it in larger pots or grow boxes until the trunk is a bit thicker though. The current pot should be good until 2027. This year, I got about 4 foot extensions growing. We'll see if I can hit 6 feet next year. :)

Here's a better pic.

gonna try 3 gallon box next year and will make it bit better than my 1st 5 gallon box ;)

I just did the calculations, and the dimensions I gave you would give you 2.88 gallons. 👈👈;)

Go a bit larger to get a full 3 gallons.

doubt if 0.12 gallon gives me more trunk thickening speed ;)
for exact dimensions - i need to check how many boxes i can fit into small balcony and into coldframe
cherry 5 gallon box is also rough dimenions - like about 30 cm box and its quite big on my balcony
for now i want go over an inch trunk with something
