Hi all! It's my first winter up here in the north, and I am very concerned that I have not adequately protected one of my junipers. Unfortunately the tips of the needles look a bit brown, and I was looking for guidance as to how to nurse it back to health. Am I being a ninny? Is this something else like fungal infection? Is there a chance for this tree to recover? Let me know what you guys think, thanks in advance.

My bet is maybe a little winter wind burn +/- old spider mite damage. I have a needle juniper, J. squamata, whose foliage is similar to the way yours looks. It had a bad case of mites toward the end of last summer, and it was essentially unprotected this past winter and saw a fair amount of cold with wind. I don't think you've got much to worry about, and I bet it will bud out just fine. I assume it's in good soil.

Yes, I bought it from Jim Doyle's nursery last December, so I assume no mites and it was just the cold that did it, those guys really know what they're doing! Glad to hear that it's not doing too poorly, thanks very much for reassuring me.

Just wanted to say thank you for the reassurance! I had very little die off and the plant is pumping out little green buds everywhere.

Now you can see why I was so worried!

I love this guy! Very excited to get it in a proper pot next year.

Bubba, it would be very helpful to us and you if you would update your profile with your city and state. We can give you better advice with that knowledge.

I have a pro nana juni that has some dried needles in spots. Just watch the watering (not too little, not too much) and protect it from drying winds. Get it outside when the weather allows and it should bounce back.

Oops, will do. Yeah, it's outside now, and has new buds everywhere. Updating profile now!
