I do not have a FakeBook account intentionally and out of belief.
I know that people are after collecting "Likes"
I'm not interested in knowing why they do this, why this is important to them...

I would like you to clarify the function of the "Like" button here on BNut.
I hit the button when I read a post which I agree upon and only then.

But every now and then I notice "likes" by the same individuals on posts which are opposing each other.
This I cannot understand!
Is this button member dependent? I mean do people hit the button merely as followers of specific members?
I may be naive or ignorant. This I do not deny.

But this is a puzzle for me and I want to understand. What is the real function of the "Like" button?

That could be an example of someone enjoying the back and forth...
Maybe simply liking it because they like the fact that that person is willing to say something...else.

I like a post for many reasons, it could be because I find the post helpful or even just interesting. Maybe a nice pic of their trees or development of them.
Then again I will like a post for a touch of humour too, in some cases out of humility. I also find a like is probably a better option than posting a post with little content like "Wow" or "Great tree". I will also endeavour to try and like any post that is a direct reply to a question I ask or a thread I start.
Often it is just an acknowledgement more than anything else.

Oh and I just won a shohin pot on facebook so it is not all bad.

Sometimes I forget to "like" posts that I really like :) I am too busy thinking about it :)

The whole point was to provide an avenue for people to provide positive feedback... without cluttering up a thread with short posts because you felt the need to say "exactly!" or "I agree!" or "wow!" (though you can always do that as well).

I've just hit the like button twice now. Because I agree, I like what was said and don't have to type the same.
Sometimes it's a helpful tool. Imagine you're asking for help and receive only one response... but with 10 likeys. It means something. And you can check who agreed.

I use it for posts I agree with and posts I like. I'll admit that I sometimes do like opposing posts. Just because they are opposing, does not mean they both don't make good points.
Exactly....that's exactly why I don't have you on ignore....:D
........she ignores me tho....

Exactly!

The "like" button is a mixed blessing. Some people will like every post they read, so it doesn't mean much. I try to be selective with mine. I will like a post that disagrees with me if the conversation remains civil.

Τhanks everybody! :)

So, I guess I am using the button the correct way and within the context of its purpose!
I am selective, too. And for the most part it is an acknowledgement more than anything else, as Starfox said above.

But I also forget to "like" so many posts that I agree with... and in this case its service as a "tool" is decreased. I apologize!

I "like" anything that I like even a little...

It could be a whack tree....
But if you say something funny...

I like .that.

When .I don't like something.....

That. Is .more important!

Like can also be used to be sarcastic ,
So when I see arguments and see the likes, I know why the person is doing the like.
Positively, it shows that there is an interest, and your not just wasting time.

It is / was an excellent idea, pity IBC doesn't use it. Instead you see views.

For me, it's a like being in a conversation but not speaking. Let's say we are sitting around and my friends are debating something and I don't really feel like getting involved or I just don't have anything substantial to contribute but I am enjoying the banter. I might nod my head to show that I am participating. For humans up to 90% of our language is non-verbal so I see it as the electronic equivalent of this type of nonverbal participation.

Alexandria,

very simple ------------ worry about your thoughts.

So if something is posted, and your read and like it --------- just like it.
No need to worry about much else, this is the Internet, it isn't real.

It is dangerous to come to - loo loo la la land ---- and try and learn.

On our side we are lucky, been doing this since 1980 or so and ironed out
all the Bonsai bugs a while ago, even read up on the History part and
with the help of the Japanese Embassy, and Chinese relatives from Canton [ Grow and Clip land ]
just literally grew.

So now help where one can, and just enjoy the conversations, and ignore the negatives.

And now a song for you -

and the parody -

and there is also the hidden meaning

Enjoy
Good Day
