I saw on another thread mention of j communis hybridizing with j horizontalis. Interesting, I didn't know that happened. There are probably lots of hybrids out there eh? Any being used for bonsai that anyone knows about?

I sometimes find populations of j scopulorum and j horizontalis hybrids. I found a nice collectible on this spring, here it is, shedding some foliage but looking good so far, collected about a month ago. Good material hidden in there, fantastic basal flare and nebari buried for the time being.

Wired, among scopulorum there are great many "variations" When you are in the field over distances there are some with abysmal foliage for bonsai but some with foliage almost like Itoigawa. Is this variation in the species or natural crossing with Horizontalis? Who knows without genetic testing. It really doesn't matter to me as long as there are good qualities for making bonsai. Is the crossing possible? absolutely! Collecting comes with a caveat, good observational skills which you seem to have :)

Wild juniper hybrids ? I am sure its possible them Juni's are sluts afterall...

By the way, what the hell is on your fingers?

Tell me about it! You should see what the willows get up to around here!

I was posting between coats of paint in the kitchen, not a bad colour eh? Mistint from the hardware store $10/ can.

Thanks Gary, I know what you mean about the foliage variations. There are however populations of these hybrids identified somehow by real botanists in a national park about 200km from where I collected this tree. There are a few spots I've been where there are pockets of junipers with drastically different growth habits, more or less looking like giant horizontalis. Really thick craggy bark too. Anyway, I think that's what I have here, it'll be fun to grow along the other junis. I've taken a few cuttings from these plants too, they look like good subjects for field growing.

On the subject of hybrids I collected some spruce this year too that I think are likely englemann/white hybrids.

Ahhhh Wired, a man of my own heart! Do you also know of Jerry Morris?
