Why is this happening to my tree?

Looks like it's dropping its leaves in preparation for dormancy.
I put plastic around it with rocks on top. I was worried the roots are staying to wet?

This is definitely not standard horticultural practice, and even if your tree is planted in the heaviest clay soil imaginable, I'd remove the plastic an rocks and simply cover with pine bark mulch or something similar. Leaving the plastic in place will smother the roots as it starves them of oxygen.

Indeed is looking like Fall leaf shedding of maple tree in wrong forum. Maybe tree is troubled by too wet substrate caused by plastic and rocks. USDA climate zone needed in profile please
