you should only seriously stress out your tree twice a year, something like that? Is wiring considered stressing out your tree?

This really only applies to needled conifers, like pines and hemlock. Even then, it doesn't necessarily apply to younger, vigorously growing specimens.

You probably won't find a thread about the "one insult per year" quote. However, there will be loads of posts within threads where it is used. As @bonsai-ben stated, it's used mostly when talking about heavy work on conifers.

One major insult per year.

If you are repotting a rootbound nursery tree for the first time into an Anderson flat or pond basket... I wouldn't touch it for a year :) That's just me... and I've killed a LOT of trees by ignoring this :)

Same thing can be said for a yamadori... pot it up, and leave it alone for a year :)

If however you have a tree that is already well-established in good bonsai soil, with lots of fine ramified roots, you can repot, root trim, and prune all in one season and the tree won't miss a beat.
