Hi,

Three questions:

1. What kind of moss is this?
2. Is it normal for it to grow in height so much within only 1 month?
3. Should I try to flatten the moss, remove some or trim the tips?? What should I do?

I can't identify the moss species for you. That would probably require a bryologist? (moss expert)
I can tell you that it appears to be a normal moss that is suitable for bonsai. I believe the tall stalks are called seta and have a capsule (sporangium) at the tip which will mature and open to release millions of spores that may go on to grow into new mosses. Mosses do not actually flower but in essence your moss is preparing to breed.
If you don't like the look just trim the tall bits with your shears - mow the lawn.

Yup....Exactly as you say. I have it growing all around my home area. And, always have a fresh supply of moss.

I would remove the moss altogether.
Actually my fertilizing regimen would kill it so I wouldn't need to.
I don't like it on the surface of my substrate.

You could get regular growth that tall in a good month.
This winter been a good month.

Your moss looks to be what we here officially call

"Crack in the Sidewalk Moss"

I don't know the species, your looks healthy. Trim off the spore producing threads if you don't like the look. But leave them if you do like the look.

January was the warmest in world history. We're all gonna die. More taxes is the only salvation.
The world is unbalanced. We need someone to sign on as “NotForsoothe!”.

You can try to use the trimmings to make new moss. Some people have a real hard time growing it themselves.

Yes you can. Its actually better to use all of the moss, rather than just the seta, simply because its hard to predict at what exact moment the spores will have grown to maturity (and the mass of moss will have dormant or burgeoning spores everywhere).

The best way I have seen and tried is to take some of the moss, chop it as small as is possible (via blender is the best but I use an old knife on a 2x4), mix it up with some variety of soured milk (buttermilk is the best), and paint it onto a moist medium that will allow the moss to thrive.
