Not exactly bonsai but I made use of some of the elm logs. Plugged them with lions mane mushroom spawn. I got 4 logs and the stump with a 100 pack of plugs. Hopefully this time next year I will have delicious fungus among us.

Too funny . I picked up some spent mushroom blocks from a local grower a few days ago . Lions mane , oysters , chestnut , etc . Something different to do like I need more to take care of lol .mushroom beds fall 1.jpgmushroom beds fall 2.jpgmushroom beds fall 3.jpgmushroom beds fall 4.jpg

You can break up the oyster blocks and mis them into a bed of straw and make a shroom bed.
Yeah , I have been experimenting with bark like the YouTube guy Jacques in the garden . Pretty sure I spelled that wrong. I have critters eating mine hence the raised bed . Another rabbit hole to go down. Curious to see how yours comes out. Maybe my next project. These are free blocks and I am sure buying them like you did or blocks would be a lot better.

Went through my tropicals (not all bonsai) in preparation for winter. A few haircuts just to make room for them all, but mostly just taking stock after a hard summer of mostly being ignored.

Which, of course, led to some well earned and much needed father/daughter time. Showed her how to use concave cutters for the first time.

Did a day hike in Tahoe with my wife yesterday, then did some very light pruning today on my large Lorapetalum, collected from the landscape last year. Will add wire next and continue to let it recover another year.

I know a real nice hike there at Page Meadows. Worth checking out this time of year.

Sprayed all my tropicals with BioAdvanced 3 in 1 before having to bring them in tomorrow (night temps are starting to get in the low 40s (5-6c) next week). I did a neem spray a bit over a week ago.

Last couple years I've just done two rounds of neem 10 days apart, but still start seeing pests part way through winter (which leads to more fun neem spraying in a bathtub).

Decided to switch it up after watching one of @leatherback's latest videos (thanks for all you do!).

Not just today, but any spare time this weekend was spent clearing out the 3-season room, cleaning up a few trees, and setting up a zone for the succulents. Highlights include, but are not limited to:

Found this Mugo pine for cheap at a garden centre about a month ago. I should have watched it more closely/at all, but oh well. It was hard to get a good picture, but thickest trunkline is nicer looking than I thought and has a pretty drastic taper. Definitely not wanting to be an upright. Leaving it as-is until final winter prep.

Nothing special about this schefflera, it's just pretty with the flush of growth. This window gets a few hours of bright morning sun (and even more later in the year); should be perfect for the the jades, afras, and nearby ficuses (ficii?).

Finally, I bought this sekka (took me too long to find the Japanese name for the cultivar) hinoki earlier in the year and had no idea what to do with it. For a long time I hated it; I only bought it because it was weird and I wanted to make sense of it. All it got this year was a repot and food/water. Tonight as I power down and switch back into day-job mode I think I'll leave it on my kitchen table for a few days so that I walk by it over and over, from different angles. When I know, I'll know. And if not, well springtime tends to come back eventually.

Finally, a helper and a hinderer. Some days they like to swap roles. I keep 'em both around regardless.

One of our post docs landed a job at a company owned by one of our professors, and he lured me in with the promise of getting basically my own laboratory.
We will be investigating how DNA and RNA that "do nothing" on paper, actually plays a role in some diseases and if we're able to come up with cures or therapies.

My team gave me an awesome mug, so I drank coffee today!

Not me! But people that do similar stuff are developing a therapy in a similar way we would do it.

Since this is phase 1/2, I think it's going to be available to everyone in about 10 years. Now lets hope our insurance covers it!
