Browsing around on Phutu I came across this article: http://www.phutu.com/mame-maple/
Due to the size of the container he loosened the tree from the pot with a rubber mallet. Looking at such an intact rootmass after removal I wonder, why not use this technique for bigger trees as well? Would the rootmass collapse or might it be a viable technique?

This is what my teacher does when she can't get a tree out of the pot. We still had one pot break on us this year though.
