I've been growing a lot from seed since I'm fairly new to bonsai, about a year in and I had the idea to do a bald Cypress fusion and was wondering if anyone knows if they'll fuse. I've been looking at a lot of successful fusion projects so I'm pretty extatic to try next spring. I got plenty of seedlings to mess around with. Any input or feedback is welcome.

I doubt they would fuse - the bark hardens pretty quick. Plus you can grow one as thick as your leg in 5-7yrs in the ground. It would take at least this long for a fusing project.

I think I'll have a go anyway if all else fails make it a multi trunk.

Dawn redwood fuses so I don't see why bald Cypress wouldn't. Saw a post on Google saying bald Cypress is excellent for fusion plus I know from experience they swell tremendously when submerged. I have plenty and I don't want them all to look identical so nothing lost from trying. And idk what ur talking bout bark hardens quick... I'm growing several from seed an they only have slight bark from swelling, definitely not hard bark

Do you have a photo of the fused dawn redwoods? I have a few dawns, I love em!
Nah I just checked Google, all da pics were partial fusion an didn't look the best but I ordered some Dawn redwood seeds last week so I'm for sure gonna try once mine grow

Sounds to me like Google is your go to guy. Why bother even coming here and asking if it can be done. It isn't like there are people here that would know about such things.
I hate to tell you this but choppy is right. Why try fusing some when you can grow a trunk in less time and know it will be a real trunk. Not some put together fake hollow tube of saplings that will hopefully look like a tree in the far future. If they do fuse like your man Google says they will.

I have a clump/group of three BC, it is posted elsewhere on the site. All of their surface roots are fused and the group is actually one "tree" now. I see no reason why it would not be the same for the trunks, but I have to agree with the others as to why you would need to do it. The usual reason for fusing is to create a large trunk more quickly and as it was mentioned above, you can grow a huge trunk on a BC probably quicker than your fusion project would take to completely fuse.

Seen some fusions with hollow trunks and just really liked the look. If most my seedlings grow I'll have plenty to grow regurlarly so just starting my collection and mostly from seed I'd like to have something different. I appreciate ur input

Unfortunately @M. Frary this is where things are headed here. A guy from Missouri who doesn't know JACK SHIT about Bonsai asks about a BC and doesn't get the answers he wants so he'll just ignore it since he knows best. I mean why ask? I certainly don't know anything about BC I only have about 50 currently and live in North Florida but hey it doesn't matter.

1. He most likely won't even do this.
2. He'll NEVER have the balls to show the process and progress.
3. This is pointless as if you want a small fat hollow trunk BC I could show you the proper way to make one. But he knows best so again why bother?
4. This is a perfect example of what @Bananaman has been talking about. A few articles from who knows what moron and some Google images and a bonsai expert is made.

Have at it Mr. Naka.

I hope you experienced people don’t get discouraged by those who ignore your advice. This forum has saved me hundreds of wasted hours by not letting me make the same mistakes made so many times before. Ignore the doubters and help those of us willing to learn.

You could save that for your own post threat honestly lol. If someone wants to stop offering advice over ONE design disagreement then I don't need their advice thank you have a good one.

I think it's more of how it's taken and handled. If someone post an idea or thought they are convinced will work or be the end all be all and then gets a real sensible critique they more often then naught get all offended and wanna argue. You see this from newbies to veterans. Constructive criticism especially in this art should be taken and appreciated. If you get all butt hurt because what YOU think is a good idea gets hammered then why not stop back and see why that is. Rather than start the bonsai apocalypse. Your not always gonna hear what you want. Fused BALD CYPRESS trunks? I mean come on! You had to KNOW goin in that people were gonna be like WHY. If you know the species then you should really try and think about how that would work out HAD everyone been like wow that's a great idea.

Everyone is getting butt hurt over me trying. I still WILL have plenty to grow in ground to get "the size of my leg" in 7 years and "fused root clump style" all most said was why do it or don't do it. My main inquiry was will it work and @Mellow Mullet gave me that answer pretty well. It's not an argument or a debate. You have to risk killing a tree by hollowing it out or collect an old tree that's partly hollow. I saw some great looking trident maple fusions that were hollow with good taper and nebari and an idea sparked. How long ago did everyone still think the Earth was flat? Who thought the wright brothers could go from bikes to planes? Nothing is lost from trying just a lot of pissed off old guys who think they know best.

I always thought fusion was one of those things you did to get total control over the final shape of a tree. It lets you develop a trunk without trunk chop scars, but it doesn't really save you time and it's still going to have the fusion scars.

How long ago did everyone still think the Earth was flat?

The belief that there was a widespread belief in a flat Earth during the medieval period was actually just Protestant propaganda against the Catholic education. It's pretty much been established since Antiquity, to the point that we had a pretty good idea how big the world was back in the BC.

That said, Flat Earthers are a thing. Warning: Prolonged exposure to flattards can induce neuronecrosis. Peruse at your own risk.

Man I know this is an old thread and idk who if any of you will see this but after reading through it I’m a little dumbfounded. Enthusiastic beginner has an idea that he finds fascinating and is “ecstatic” to try it out with some of his extra seedlings. Then @choppychoppy chumpychumpy comes along and shuts him down with “doubt”… he DOUBTS they will fuse.. and why? Because their bark hardens pretty quick… and you can’t do that because tree grows faster by itself.. umm what does that have to do with anything? and why are you putting your opinion of a scientifically proven process up in a forum where someone is asking for any tips or guidance based on experience or facts towards his future project based on said scientifically proven process. He wasn’t asking permission. Chumpychumpy proceeds to throw a tantrum when his comment that provides nothing but irrelevant information preceding a wild guess he came up with based on ‘cuz bark is hard’ that he himself isn’t even entirely sure is true only “doubtful” was disregarded… anyone with half a brain could see that chumpchump doest provide anything beneficial or useful to the thread yet he has multiple people backing him up, and I don’t mean his comment I mean they are literally backing up that fact that a beginner is disregarding a what? veteran? Is that what they claim to be? Or “experienced” A bunch of cry babies complaining about how this is what this forum has come to.. “a bunch of guys that don’t know jackshit about bonsai” interesting claim considering the original question really had nothing to do with bonsai yeah he was growing the seedlings for bonsai but this was strictly a botanical question on the science of trees fusing or “inosculation” which y’all clearly know NOTHING about…. “I doubt they’ll fuse” gotta be kidding me.. I’m new to this forum but if this is all there is on here just a bunch of close minded old timers that think they know all there is to know in this world then I probably won’t be sticking around much longer.. probably never even heard the term inosculation.. go look at bald cypresss in nature they naturally look like a bunch of saplings that grew real big and fused to each other the idea of starting from scratch with a beautiful bonsai in mind with 8-12seedlings that you grew and trained specifically to tie them together so they will fuse is a bad ass idea and this thread could have gone an entirely different direction if you weren’t a giant dead stump in the first comment

I just came across and ate my sandwich over it. Very amusing.
Replies can come across bold sometimes without it being ment that way.
Being polite but sincerely and truthfull is the best way. And best not post when being in a foul mood ( believe me).

Most people are more than willing to help here and this forum is a goldmine when it comes to knowledge.

That being said.. if you are new to this forum and this is your first post, than you are focusing on the wrong things imo 😃
