What do i have here? Im in zone 9a, which only includes about 1,000 types of azalea varieties so not that many lol.o_O
This was given to me by a local club member after one of our members passed away.
It looks to me like a white gumpo..but i havent found any with the little pink in them and gumpo seems to be more "frilly" around the edges. What ever it is i'm excited to have a white azalea in my collection. 20170206_173632.jpg 20170206_173708.jpg 02-06-17 White bloom azalea.jpg

What a great looking flower, congrats.

Maybe some kind of Formosa. The wide funnel shape, with the green speckles in the middle looks like an heirloom variety to me more than a Satsuki. Pretty blooms

I wouldnt doubt it was some nursery material found here in the south. The leaves seem on the larger side for Satsuki's, but not too large to be unusable for bonsai.

When I saw them white buds start pushing out you shoulda' seen my eyes. Most common azaleas I come across are either salmon or purpleish in color and the white ones the nurseries carry are very large leaf/huge blooms.
Thanks for your help Eric.

Definitely not a gumpo, I have pink, white, and fancy pink, all have wider petals that are ruffled on the edges. I have an Indica that is white with green freckles on the throat, called glacier, but it does not have the pink specks.

Still, a nice flower.

John

When searching for "white azalea" flowers and my limited knowledge with them, most search returns yielded "gumpo" but like you said the lack of ruffled edges leads me to believe its something else. Oh how I wish I could read whats on that plant tag. :(
Again Thanks for your insight on this plant. I think some cuttings are in order...too nice of a flower to pass up.:D

@Mellow Mullet
I have a Gumpo Pink, I obtained it and chopped it earlier last spring.
I notice that flower buds are still not present, and I read that it's a late bloomer.
How is yours?
Compared to other azaleas, does it really flower that much later?
My other azaleas have flower buds seemingly ready to pop.

Post the tag I may be able to read it.

You may have chopped it too late, you should be able to see buds if it is gonna bloom this season.

Yes, gumpo is a satsuki and satsukis bloom at least a month or two behind the others.

Hmmmm, I chopped before blooming last year. Thought for sure I'd see them this year.....and I still may, I guess I'll have to wait and see, definitely none there yet, it hasn't started growing this year yet.

While I appreciate the offer, there's literally nothing left to read. The plastic has been in the sun for soo long that all the pen or pencil had disappeared. Only thing left is a "?/?/07". So im guessing him and his wife got it in 2007, or re-potted it in 07'. Sorry if I wasn't clearer before.

The buds actually start to form in the fall (where you can see them) so you should be able to at least see a tiny bud at the end of the branches by now. I will look on my Shimo and see if they are still tiny, it is one of the last to bloom.

Did you prune the growth any in the summer? If you pruned after June/ July, chances are you pruned the ends off that were gonna make the flowers. I have done it before.

No prob I think we just misunderstood each other thats too bad.....got your work cut out identifing that

I have a White Cascade Azalea as labeled on the tag which looks similar. Don't remember extra color in the flowers as your's but pure white. Have to see in May when it blooms again. I do have pics on other cputr.
As the Mullet sez it should be loaded w.buds set last year as mine is. Mine are swelling a bit with this mild winter.
Mine is also evergreen but seems to have a bit smaller leaf. Hard to tell in pics.

Went to the local shop here that specialises in Azaleas. Picked up this Satsuki 小金釆 ( Kogane Une) weird name guess the cultivar developers family name is Une. (Little gold of Une?) Anyway flowers are meant to be petite and red....
The lady at the shop or granny I should say is insanely good with azaleas so if I manage to drop by there I will show ask her....may take me a while to go there though
