I know we like to keep things natural and all, but for those who wanna be creative, here’s some inspiration. I randomly found this dinosaur skull fish tank ornament and thought it would look cool to plant a tree on it.

What’s everyone else doing that’s weird? I know someone has a root over gargoyle going on, forgot who (because I suck at names) but I think that’s interesting too

I know one who did a root over a dragon. It's twisted sick and cool.

I am all for creativity, but you still have to think long term with Bonsai. The paint on that fake skull is going to fade over time, revealing the color of the material underneath (most likely grey resin). If you were going to do this, I would use a real animal skull.

I wouldn’t call it weird, but a non-traditional project I’m working on is a more natural looking mixed tree forest (Pitch Pine and Korean Hornbeam). The rough sketch is below, post to follow in spring.

The most famous Larch over gargoyle was done some 20 years ago by Nick Lenz. I believe it currently resides in a Canadian Botanic Garden, either Toronto or Montreal. But I am not certain. There are many pictures of the same tree around. I did not locate a photo in my ''archive''. I do have a picture of a Nick Lenz larch over a clay skull and a photo of Nick's most famous tree, a reclining "Penelope; waiting for her Man"

Nick Lenz is probably the most successful practitioner of "root over sculpture", in my opinion. A big reason is that he created most of sculptures himself, with clear aesthetic goals from the beginning. In both photos you see how the tree harmonizes with the sculpture. He also avoids the obvious Halloween-style creepiness that is often a theme in these compositions.

That dude is a true artist. I was recently at a house he helped build. I was told he built the chimney. On the inside of the home are all these vines and bonsai on the brickwork, very cool. I’ll see if I took any pictures.
