Trident Hardiness

If in the ground, how cold can tridents take?
Mulched on the ground mine have seen 0 F for a night or two or four over the years. Sustained winter temps here in the middle Atlantic states is fine for them as long as you protect the roots

I put mine in a cold frame every winter.
They get down to 30 regularly, sometimes into the lower 20s a night or two.

Back in the 1990s, when we got real winters, I grew out tridents in my unprotected yard in SE MA- USDA zone 6a. Every winter, they'd see temps well below 0 F... -5 to -8... year over year, and grew just fine, +/- a little die-back if the winter was particularly cold and windy.

Thx. I keep wondering why people consider tridents so sensitive, even though their native range goes down to USDA zone 5.
Now, we only get real winter every few years nowaday but so far I have considered trident as the one species not to think about in winter.
