Does anyone have a good recommendation for a good tool set? Or just tools in general ?

Thanks

That's about as controversial as asking about a good soil mix. :) What kind of budget are you dealing with?
I don't want to spend a fortune but I could probably budget 250

What size trees?

Established, collected, collecting, nursery?

There's nothing better than cuticle cutters for small trees.
Lotta different angles and openings and blade lengths...
I got about 6 different pairs.

An exacto.

A wood carving kit.

A dremel.

Sandpaper.

Scissors.

Tweezers.

Sutures.

Needle nose pliers.

I got one Kaneshin 4s concave cutter.

A dedicated root cutter would be next on my list.

Alcohol to sterilize. Oil to preserve.

As of this moment 1 tree, about 8 in in height , also have 8 cuttings that will be planted in spring , and getting a few trees here a week or so. Just looking for some tools to get me started but need to make sure I have everyone that I will need as well thanks.

Okay, here goes. I purchased all my tools with the exception of one or two used. I found them on ebay and at local club auctions. Most of them are Masakuni and I prefer them over all others. However, I do have a couple Kiku tools and they seem to be very adequate indeed. Kaneshin tools always seem to have good reviews as well. So, if you don't mind shopping around you can put together a quality set in no time at all that will fit you price range. I hope that helps.

I will add that although they are not Japanese made, American Bonsai sells some nice tools and they will stand behind them if needed. I've been to shows and seen and felt all their tools (that just doesn't sound right) and they seem like their quality made.

@Vin never thought about buying used tools on ebay. Thats a solid idea. Thanks for sharing that. Have you ever found anything you purchased was dull? Any videos or pointers you can give for sharpening?

Most of the more quality used tools that are on ebay are usually well cared for. As far as sharpening goes, I just run this down the edges every once in a while and their pretty sharp afterwards: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B000BPASBK/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
