Too Many Trees = an opportunity for you!

Well I don't have an excuse because my grand aunt ( grandmas sister) lives in the same town as you. But it is a pretty long stretch between us. Actually that is where my dads side of the family is from. Relocated after granddad joined the navy a long time ago.

You are the first person in 15 years to admit to me that you or part of your family is from Gaston...it is pretty much an armpit:)

Less than 4 hours from Jacksonville though:)

If you do ever get to Gaston to see your grand aunt...please give me a call...would be glad to share the garden with you and offer you some great prices on trees if you were interested...if not we can just talk bonsai:)

id make that drive!

I have a good friend who moved to Charleston this year and I'm trying to find some time to go for a visit this fall (big redfish on the fly). If I can manage to swing that trip, I'll send you a message John. It would be awesome to meet you and see your garden in the flesh - and maybe help you lighten the load a little.

That would be great...Depending on how you would come...I'm about an hour from the turn off of I95 toward Charleston or about 20 minutes from where I77 dead ends into I26 just south of Columbia.

actually i think i have met you once - did you sell some of that iron ore at the nc bonsai expo about 6-7 years ago?

if that was you, i got 3 pieces from you.

I am sure it was me! Sonny Boggs would beg...I mean encourage... me to bring some to sell each year:) It is so hard to find nice iron stone that I have given up on selling just pieces of it...

he lives about two miles from me - or he used to anyway. not sure - havent seen him in awhile. life got hectic and i wasnt able to keep meeting for our local bonsai club.

funny how small of world it can be sometimes.

Shipping is an issue. Timing adds to that.

Winter storage issues might stop some more thoughtful folks from buying a Southern tree now and moving it north.

We're headed into fall up here in Va. First frost is only six weeks away, hard freezes are also possible before the end of October. The problem gets worse as you go north.

I would definitely take an azalea or two off your hands, but I dont know (and wont know until a few days before) for sure if I can make it to either of the shows. Early College and job...

The prices are fair so don't think thats the issue!

I would've picked up that azalea probably, but I understand your reticence to ship, it is a big responsibility, and can be a pita.

Me also, a bit too far to drive on a Saturday. Thanks for sharing.

All the trees are beautiful and the prices are good.

Ive already spent too much on trees this year (Ive bought 2 in the last month that werent cheap stock) so my tree fund is tapped out.
I dont have space for any more large trees, particularly winter storage space.
The BC is too big for what I am looking for at this point in my life.
I have too many junipers and azaleas as it is.
I am keeping my number of maples low due to the time they need every day for shoot pruning in the spring
I wouldnt be able to come get any of them.

I contemplated the drive....

I know it could Never ever happen,
But I contemplated it because if there was any way I could....

The look of some of those trees and the price would make it very well worth it to me.

All I can do is sit here and encourage anyone close to dig into the fund and grab one, and please post more pictures!

Sorce

It would be worth your time! (Anyone's time) Just seeing his garden is worth a couple hours in the car... If you get to leave with a living piece of it, well... All the better!
He is only about 40-45 minutes from me, and I see something new every time I visit!

Speaking of visiting @johng I need to come see you about that tree! I am taking the Series 7 next Thursday so I am pretty busy studying til then, maybe that weekend? I will give you a call...

Its pretty clear that shipping is your primary enemy.
Shipping is a thankless task. Many buyers want you to "throw in the shipping cost" because it adds so much to the cost of a tree, right after they've offered you thirty cents on the dollar for your tree. Then they bitch because leaves drop or new shoots bend or foliage/needles are damaged. I sell a lot of prebonsai trees with long sacrifice shoots. These are trees that need to be cut back. I get buyers who complain when these sacrifice branches are bent or broken. It makes no difference to the design, and these branches are there to be removed, yet they want "half off" or some other award of compensation, or else they're going to tell everybody I ripped them off.

So, take that thirty cents on the dollar, throw in free shipping, spend 2 hours packing and shipping that tree, then get bullied into a fifty percent refund, and see if you ever want to do it again. Sometimes it makes you want to put them all into a pile and burn them instead.

For the right amount of money, you can ship anything. :) You just have to be ready to pay the $$$. UPS standard shipping applies to anything you can fit in a box that is 165 inches (length + girth) or less, and 150 lbs or less. That's a box 3 1/2 feet tall and 2 1/2 feet wide and deep. You can fit a lot of bonsai in that box :) Wire the pot securely to a board the same dimensions as the bottom of the box, insert bonsai into box, wire board to bottom of box, and fill completely with foam peanuts. Done.

Just be aware that there may be agricultural restrictions depending upon where you are shipping to/from.
