I am going to have a go at creating my first progression thread. I am horrible at documenting the trees I grow so I end up with pictures 10 years apart and no clue how I got from one to the other
So here goes
This tree is a Kishu juniper that a bought from a private collector in December. It was started from a cutting and field grown for roughly 35 years, It was dug and had some initial styling, so all in all I think it is quite good raw material Here is is on the seller's bench
Here it is after I cleaned the deadwood and live veins--with the front I want
Here it is after my initial styling. I lowered the bottom left branch and cranked down most of the top of the tree to make it a little more compact--I reduced the overall height about 4 inches (It started out as a 38" from the bench)
,
At this point I have wired only major branches
Next step is to graft some foliage onto a few of the branches up top -- you will notice the second branch on the left is a lollipop and I could not trim it back since all the foliage is on the end. I will graft some scions there as well as in some sparse areas at the top. I will do that next month and then fertilize and let it grow all summer
