Are there any Tolkien fans out there? Take a look at my new profile pic. Has anyone ever tried to make an Ent bonsai? I've seen some on the interwebs, but I want to see if any real people have ever tried it with any success, and which specie of tree would be best to try this with.
Please post your pics if you did this.

I think this is a great idea, it would be a bonsai since it's very much like a trunk instead of just the foliage without much trunk in topiary. Maybe a ficus or Chinese elm would work? Cool profile pic by the way!

Would you start with one leg and bring down a branch for the second leg or start both legs from two bifurcating roots?

maybe 2 trees that can be fused, like ficus, or trident maple. so your trunks will get grafted together where 2 legs become the body, 1 having a low apex to form the head. and 1 long branch each to form arms.
Then you should either defoliate or have a whole bunch of fine deadwood that represent hands and fingers

An ent is a mobile tree.
Not sure if ent and bonsai can be together.
Though I can see the Valar or Elves growing Bonsai.

I will however sing your idea out to them.
Music please .....................................

I could see a cool Mordor tree.
Good Day

We all want a Groot :)
Ent will be easy because there are many different Ents, so it wouldn't matter if you can't create an exact one. Groot will be tricky since he's very specific and there's only 1 of him

doesn't matter, i just want to know if anyone has ever made one
Yes, Lenz made several over the years. They have all been distributed and I don't know where they ended up. They were medium-sized larch trees. My advice is to keep and eye out for the right material (or develope something in the garden with intent) and don't do a hokey job--do it well--that is all the difference. To have and care for an Ent bonzo will be, just as much, or more, of a joy to grow and have, than most trees. visitors will always gravitate to it and it will be beloved.

I don't think an "ent bonsai" would be a bonsai. I think it would be more like a topiary?
Yes it may not be considered bonsai by most but one could make it a project that is beyond topiary. It could be a very articulated and naturalistic inclined, with fine detail. I would rather have a cool, well done Ent than the typical uninspiring Asiao-shaped potted tree.

I bought a trident last year that looked like an entling before I pruned one side this spring.

You could get some trident seedings as someone suggested and fuse them into an entling shape.

The fact that all the lady Ents left, and the gentleman Ents are continually searching for them and hopeful of either finding them or their return, is the saddest thing of all that I've read of Tolkien's work. (And if anybody knows something about lady Ents that I've made obvious that I don't in the above comment, please don't spoil it!)

Also, there used to be a Brit (I think) known as Treebeard who made FANTASTIC hobbit hole landscapes. I'll try to reach out to him. He and "Emperor Fish" always had something interesting to show. I'm not sure they made the transition from bT.

I remember these names!
