I went easier on this than the rest this spring.

Decided to repot next year, so I dug down to find the flare and nebari...
And pruned this back to proper nexts. 20170709_070421.jpg 20170709_070639.jpg 20170709_070652.jpg 20170709_070726.jpg 20170709_070848.jpg 20170709_070907.jpg 20170709_070929.jpg 20170709_070958.jpg

Flare is good....nebari is not that of one a dem primo English box.... but it is interesting...and I have a plan.

I was able to un90° a few forks with a c of wire and airline tubing slid up from the back.

Keeping nubs to tie guy wires to.
Keeping the pot rim intact for that reason too.

I'm gonna put some proper wire on what needs it sometime before end of August.

Nice work! I have little success even keeping them alive potted and looking back at notes I either have been overworking or working them at the wrong time. Left them off the list this year but will try again next

Grimmy

They frustrated me till recently, and I have decided to give them another go.
I have a rant on them as broadleaf mugo.

Follow my new 11... we are bound to learn something.
Repotting some this year...
Lotta head notes.
I'll try to document well.

Too dense or too delicate...

No way I was running wire thru here....

But something had to be done.

Keep the leaves at the tip.
Remove the other leaves --> clip.
Wire those stems and bend into nice shapes and positions
Let 'em swepper (you're a swepper, I'm a swepper, hes' a swepper too!) --> grow.

proper clip&grow:D

WIRE THOSE STEMS!

;)

Fuuuuuck no!

Just as soon smoke em as I would wire em!

No -------- grow and clip :rolleyes:

Fuuuuuck yea!

Lol!

I'm trying to get separation in place....

I do find a branch from the top way more pleasing as @Adair M is so rightfully adamant about.

That...
Trying to get it in here.
20170502_192751-jpg.143965

Reminded me today how far back this thing has to go.
(Love pics and logging em!)

I refuse to wire shit that will get cut off.
So long as it is not blocking something that needs enlarging.

I was thinking today....

"Bonsai is wiring and wiring is bonsai "

Incomplete.

I'm trying to adopt a schedule with this....

Cut once for movement, then for division.

I feel like trading a pruning for a full wiring is safer.

I do think it a bit late this season, but I figured that you believed this guy since you posted this interesting video.
I'll be giving it a try next season on my larger lemon.

... just rooting for the home team :)

As much as I love that video from California....

I can't subscribe to everything out there.

Even my weakest box backbuds exactly as needed...

I don't understand the need to defoliate.....

Especially when health, biforkation, and taper can be achieved without it...

And if I need to wire a branch fully....I do.

I'll stay an "unnecessary budknocker.."

A "Let it grow where it needs to er..."

Defoliating a branch sans tips is totally furrrrrrnt to me..
Then you have 6-8 places where you'll have a three junction. Tbars.

And no leaves to feed the tree.

No one wants that situation.

I will rub unnecessary buds till spring.
Never allow opposite branches to remain...
Keep as many leaves on my tree as possible.
Get it into shape (with evergreen safeguard)

[Just read this post.

This is in response to that already! ]

Cont'd.

..way faster than someone in my climate defoliatimg...
Maybe any climate.

This "allow them their spring flush" from b4me...

Fits right into RN'S energy generation.

That's where I subscribe.

Pruning is sooooooo key. Proper pruning.

And keeping potential problems at Bay.
PPB! (Budknocking)

The Free Mirai video on spruce pruning is Golden.

That's what I'm following for this...
As they have the same growth pattern.

Big from Mirai...

Why are we doing ANYTHING!?

Why do we defoliate a boxwood?

In doing so we are removing leaves(energy) and making the tree spend energy on 6-8 shoots, half of which we will also need to remove...(more if we are trying to create taper and interesting branch structure)

So what is our gain there?

We can let it grow out...
Gather energy....

And cut it back to the proper nexts it needs to be cut back to 3 times a year.
And we are losing nothing.
Never removing branches or leaves because we knocked buds proper before things grew....

The home team is going to win bro.

All day!
