The Importance of Starting With a Good Trunk - A Brief, but Essential, Lesson for Beginners

Leaving out the primacy of horticulture - knowing how to keep a bonsai alive - it is essential to understand that the trunk is the most important - and least malleable - aspect of a bonsai. It has been said, "Show me a great trunk, and I'll show you a great bonsai," and, "Foliage is merely current events, and branches are just recent news: but the trunk is history."

Therefore, good potential bonsai material means, first and foremost, that it has a good trunk. A good trunk has girth, and...

Nicely done. Now members can just link to that instead of repeating themselves the next time someone asks . . .

Thanks. I'm glad it's simple to do this. Seems it may really be helpful to make use of this section.

Your words...helped me take the plunge on my recent tree. That honestly I think I admired in the past, but never thought beyond that...nice trunk. Your words just grounded my decision. Thanks Will! Your words along with Al's helped me with this recent purchase. Looking forward to seeing it develop. Thanks @Brent for offering up such amazing stock. Feeling blessed...That this was still available...just waiting for me to say, come on home.
@Smoke and @grouper52 Thanks guys...for helping me feel secure in my purchase of this tree of Brent's.

Thanks Sorce...the first time I seen this, I let the lack of development keep me from purchase. Now, I'm ready to tackle it. Make it mine...so to speak. It has great bones that will make me proud to have it on my bench during development. That is what I am now about...the location on my path on my journey. And having unique character trunks. It's all in the bones...the rest is just frosting. That's my new motto...lol

Oh it will grow branches.
They propogating easily from cuttings too. Just shove them in some dirt and water.

Good to know...but with wanting to keep my collection managable. I doubt I go that route. Just focussing on good bones/trunks...and trees that do well in my location.

It ain't got no leaves!

Leaves, shmeaves . .. you can always buy some at Joannes, or cut some out of construction paper or something and paste them on - ALL my trees posted here have fake leaves and needles, and no one even notices the difference. :) Takes less maintenance, BTW . . .
